LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'Crater' is a coming-of-age tale that follows Caleb Channing (Isaiah Russell-Bailey), a kid that was raised in a lunar mining colony. Caleb will be relocated permanently to a faraway planet after the death of his father (Scott Mescudi). Before leaving the lunar mining colony, Caleb will be fulfilling his father’s last wish and will be going on one final adventure with his friends, Dylan (Billy Barrat), Marcus (Thomas Boyce), Borney (Orson Hong), and a newcomer from Earth, Addison (Mckenna Grace). After hijacking a rover, they go on a journey to explore a mysterious 'Crater'. The film had a lot of solid writing when it came to the characters. What the movie does well is being able to help the audience understand the characters’ places through dialogue. It’s refreshing to see Disney invest a decent budget into an original sci-fi world for a live-action film.

Light in the darkness

There is light in the darkness, but that light is incredibly dark, considering the film's circumstances. The marketing has done an excellent job of hiding precisely what 'Crater' is about, making it look like nothing more than a road trip movie with a bunch of fun kids. Still, the circumstances of that road trip are shrouded in a world built on labor violations and never seeing loved one's again because this isn't just a road trip before Caleb goes to a new planet [that he only gets to go to because his dad died], he will go into cryosleep to get to the new planet because the journey will take 100 years. By the time he wakes up, everyone he knows will be dead.

'Crater's melancholic ending

After a fun adventure, we see how Caleb and his friends make it through the meteor shower when everything in space is in lockdown. However, due to a lack of oxygen, they return to the rover. In the end we see how Dylan wakes up for a few minutes and Caleb confesses how Dylan will always be his best friend until light fuses out and Caleb goes into cryosleep. Regardless, the other four were safe and sound and lived a happy life in lunar colony. However, as previously established in the storyline, Caleb finds Addison's brother and befriends him to have a new adventure.
