Dasani -- the American brand of bottled water created by The Coca-Cola Company -- is a cult hate object of sorts. So much that after a Boston Celtics fan reportedly threw the brand's water bottle at NBA star Kyrie Irving's head, it was the brand that started trending and no one had good things to say about it.

Irving was leaving the court at TD Garden Arena in Boston, Massachusetts following the Brooklyn Nets' 141-126 victory on Sunday, May 30. That's when 21-year-old Cole Buckley of Braintree, Massachusetts allegedly threw a Dasani water bottle at Irving. Buckley has been charged with assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon and will be arraigned on Tuesday, June 1, in Boston Municipal Court.

"We will support and provide assistance to Boston Police as this incident is under review," a TD Garden spokesperson said in a statement. "We have zero tolerance for violations of our guest code of conduct, and the guest is subject to a lifetime ban from TD Garden."

Following the incident, Irving said, "You're seeing a lot of old ways come up. It has been that way in history in terms of entertainment, performers, and sports for a long period of time and just underlying racism and just treating people like they're in a human zoo. Throwing stuff at people, saying things. There is a certain point where it gets to be too much."

While many online spoke about what Irving said, more people seemed interested in an opportunity to mock Dasani. “Must have been Dasani for it to be considered a dangerous weapon,” said a Twitter user, sharing a news report on the incident. “The Celtics fan that threw a water bottle at Kyrie should be charged with assault. Include “with a deadly weapon” if it was Dasani,” said another. “The reason why Camp Crystal Lake has a death curse is because the lake is filled with Dasani,” a Twitter user said referring to the fictional summer camp for kids in the ‘Friday the 13th’ film series.

One Twitter user wrote, “I’d rather drink tap water before I open a bottle of Aquafina or Dasani.” Another Twitter user said, “guys I found the spring where they get Dasani water,” sharing a photo of a dirty commode. One person suggested, “Dasani did 9/11 so we would have to buy water bottles at airports,” in a mock conspiracy theory.

Last year, Mel Magazine, in an investigative piece about the Internet’s hatred for Dasani, spoke with the world’s leading water sommelier, Martin Riese, who said, “To be honest, I refuse to drink Dasani; I will never put it into my mouth. Because I’m really not interested in the taste of highly processed, designed-by-focus-group factory water, which is what Dasani is. So it makes me happy that Americans are finally realizing that they shouldn’t spend their money on filtered tap water.”

He explained that Dasani, along with Smartwater, Aquafina and “any other bottled water that doesn’t say ‘spring water’ on the bottle,” take tap water and filter out all of the minerals and chemical contaminants before inserting some combination of minerals until the combination creates a flavor profile people like. “It’s the biggest lie on planet Earth,” Riese said.
