LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: CNN held a town hall meeting with former US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, May 10. Reports suggest Trump frequently lied during the event, which lasted for more than an hour, and attacked the moderator, Kaitlin Collins. He doubled down on his accusations about election fraud in a rant that continued for more than five minutes.

Immediately after the town hall, a team of fact-checkers, reportedly under the direction of CNN anchor Jake Tapper, responded to Trump's misleading statements. Insiders at CNN expressed their disapproval of the choice to host Trump, calling the occasion a "disgrace" and a "huge platform to spew his lies," according to Independent.

'Horrible interrogation'

However, CNN has received criticism from both the left and the right for the town hall. While one side excoriated the media by highlighting the sexual abuse cases against Trump, others slammed them for mocking him while he was making his point. A user wrote on Twitter, "HORRIBLE 'interrogation' of  @realDonaldTrump On @CNN, all ethics of journalism broken, won't allow Trump to talk. Even if you disagree, allow the man to make his point. WATCH. HORRIBLE." Meanwhile, Donald Trump Jr wrote, "I'm told this is real… it seems real, and it's surprisingly honest and accurate for CNN… but who knows these days."

'CNN should be ashamed of themselves'

The outlet also received brickbats from those on the left of the spectrum. "Dear CNN, I get you are desperate, but what you did tonight enabled an already violent base and elevated a sexual predator purely for views. What CNN did is horrible and tasteless. Show off if you are never watching CNN again." Someone else tweeted, "Are You planning to watch CNN anymore??? #BoycottCNN." Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez didn't mince words as she wrote, "CNN should be ashamed of themselves. They have lost total control of this "town hall" to again be manipulated into platforming election disinformation, defenses of January 6, and a public attack on a sexual abuse victim. The audience is cheering him on and laughing at the host."

Fellow Democrat Harry Sission echoed AOC's sentiments as he wrote, "Sexual abuser Donald Trump just mocked his victim live on air, and the crowd laughed. Stellar job CNN. Giving this piece of sh*t a platform was a terrible idea."

In the interview, Trump reportedly did not accept accountability for the January 6 riots. In addition, he made fun of E Jean Carroll's claims of sexual assault, for which a jury found him guilty on Tuesday. Trump was also briefly arrested for a probe into a 2016 payment of $130,000 to pornstar Stormy Daniels.
