MAINE, PORTLAND: A few students at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine, are demanding to fire their professor after she claimed in class that there are only two sexes. Professor of Education Christy Hammer reportedly made the remark that outraged the graduate students during a heated discussion about gender identity in her class on 'Creating a Positive Learning Environment', according to Daily Mail.

Daily Mail report says only one student supported the professor's statement and the rest of them maintained that both social and biological genders are on a spectrum. According to other participants in the class, most people concur that there is a spectrum for both gender and biological sex. Two dozen graduate students who were enrolled in Hammer's class kept calling for her to be fired because they thought she was anti-trans. As a result, her former students are now reluctant to return to her classroom and will only come if a new teacher is hired. The course is necessary to complete the graduate-level Extended Teacher Education Program and obtain a Maine teaching certification.

The point was first made in class on September 7, but it was raised again a week later when non-binary student Elizabeth Leibiger, who had been absent the previous week, mentioned the topic again. She then stated that she felt 'personally attacked' after the professor stated once more that there are only two sexes. "I asked [Hammer] how many sexes there were," Leibiger explained. "She said, 'Two,' and I felt personally attacked."

There are only two sexes biologically. Men are born with XY chromosomes, while women are born with XX chromosomes. According to progressives, gender can have a broader spectrum than sex. However, anti-woke activists warn that the fixation on denying the biological reality that only two sexes exist is absurd and may endanger people's health. Almost the entire 22-student class walked out, with the exception of one, demanding a meeting with the university's School of Education and Human Development, Daily Mail reported.

Speaking to Fox news, Leibiger said, "I let her know I didn't think she was qualified to teach a class about positive learning environments. It's the ultimate irony."

The position of Professor Hammer remained unchanged after the restorative justice meeting. Interim Provost Adam Tuchinsky told the Bangor Daily News, "We are aware of this situation and are taking steps to provide students the support they need." According to the university's latest proposal, the professor won't be fired and an "alternative" section of the course will be created. A university spokesperson stated, "We have developed an alternative plan for this class and will be opening a new section of this course for those students who would like to move. The original section taught by professor Hammer will continue for any student who wishes to remain in that class."

Leibiger stated, "It's our job as educators to grow and change, address our biases, and above all else, protect every one of our students. I think that the next step USM needs to take is being clear about what accountability will look like for Christy Hammer."

A petition to keep Hammer in her job has received nearly 2,000 signatures, indicating that many people are happy to support her position.
