Who was Christina Bird? 11-yr-old dies after being taken off life support days after hit-and-run that killed her friend
An 11-year-old girl died four days after she was placed on life support following an ATV hit-and-run crash, which also claimed the life of her best friend. Christina 'Tina' Bird was spending the Fourth of July weekend with her best pal Jacob Martinez,12, at a campground in Apple Valley, California.
The duo was reportedly riding on the same ATV on July 2 when another ATV crashed into them, completely totaling the vehicle and killing Jacob instantly. Christina was rushed to hospital with several broken bones and a severed spinal cord. However, she was pronounced dead at 8:50 am on Wednesday morning, July 6, at the Loma Linda University Medical Center, according to her uncle Ernie Nunez.

"The doctors did their final tests today to see if there is any life in Tina. The results were negative," Ernie wrote on a GoFundMe page set up for Christina's mother, Felicia Nunez. "Tina has grown her pair of wings to join her Grandma and Grandpa in Heaven where she is pain-free."
Christina and Jacob were near their families' campsite when they rode the ATV around 9 pm and were stuck by another ATV rider, who fled the scene. Speaking to KTLA through tears, Jacob's aunt Daisy Montano recounted the horror her family encountered when they arrived at the scene of the crash. "We were told that the first person that tried to perform CPR on my nephew turned him around, but the only part that turned was the top half of his body because he was so broken, so we knew immediately that he was dead," Montano told the station. "And my brother was weeping on the ground to please help his son come back to life."
Felicia told the outlet that Jacob was declared dead at the scene, while Christina was rushed to the hospital with multiple broken bones and a severed spinal cord. Devastated family members were hopeful that the 11-year-old would somehow recover despite the brutal injuries. Tragically, she passed away four days later. "My daughter was 11 years old. She was loved by many people," Felicia told the outlet.

The accident is currently being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, which is looking for a bright orange 2021 RZR Turbo S or Turbo S4 ATV that they believe was used by the driver who fled the scene of the crash. Families of both victims condemned the driver and called them a coward who needed to turn themselves in to the authorities. "My nephew was mangled. He was trampled to death," Montano told KTLA. "And that person just left. Why flee? You left two children to die." GoFundMe campaigns were set up to help both families. At the time of publication, Christina's family has raised over $28,000, while Jacob's family has raised more than $21,000.
