LIVERPOOL, UK: Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock opened the first night of their European tour at M&S Arena in Liverpool while addressing the respective stage attacks that put them in the headlines. During their set, Chris Rock, days after rejecting the offer to host Oscars 2023, finally shared his thoughts on getting slapped by Will Smith during Oscars 2022.

The legendary comedian shared that was the nicest joke he ever said. He revealed that he went to work the very next day, adding that in an America where people now succeed through either infamy, excellence, or claiming victim status, he was no real victim. Dave Chappelle too spoke about him getting attacked on stage a few months ago. Comparing his unfortunate incident to the Oscar slapgate, Chappelle joked that Rock had one-upped him that night by strolling on stage and quipping, “Was that Will Smith?” while speaking about his attacker, who said he was inspired by the Hitch-slap.

‘The nicest joke I ever told’

Finally addressing his infamous Oscars 2022 controversy, Chris Rock asked the audience, “Did that s**t hurt?” adding, “Goddam right, the motherfu**er hit me over a bulls**t joke, the nicest joke I ever told”, as reported by the Daily Mail. Speaking of the incident, Will had slapped Chris Rock after the latter cracked a balding joke on Will’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith who was suffering from alopecia. Rock quipped, “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2!”. A furious Will Smith then walked onto the stage and slapped the comedian asking him to keep his wife’s name "out of his mouth" after coming back to his seat.

‘Will did the impression of a perfect person for 30 years’

After cracking a joke on his recent onstage assault in Los Angeles, Dave Chappelle turned his attention to the Chris Rock attack. While mentioning Will, Chappelle asserted, “A lot of people forget who Will Smith is” referring to the latter’s rough upbringing in West Philadelphia. The standup comedian continued, “Then 10 minutes before he was about to get the biggest award he acted like he was back in Philadelphia.”

Chappelle added, “Will did the impression of a perfect person for 30 years, and he ripped his mask off and showed us he was as ugly as the rest of us.” During his set, the comedian continued, “Whatever the consequences are, I hope he doesn’t put his mask back on again, and lets his real face breathe,” concluding, “I see myself in both men.”
