'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Part 4 Ending Explained: Does Sabrina survive Eldritch terrors and defeat the Void?
Spoilers for 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina'
Part 4 of 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' is the last part of the series, and with eight episodes, it was a thrill to unfold the Eldritch terrors and watch the cast of the old series make an appearance. From the dangers that hit Greendale to the alternative universe, we're sure that the series may have turned some heads. Here is how 'At the Mountain of Madness' unfolded.
As Mary Wardwell (Michelle Gomez) narrates from the Eldritch Gospel as written by Reverend Lovecraft, the audience is taken on a wild journey on Halloween night, Sabrina Spellman's (Kiernan Shipka) birthday. Two days before Halloween, Nicholas "Nick" Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood), gives Sabrina a locket as an early birthday present that will prove to be of help in the future.
Later the duo is interrupted by Sabrina Morningstar who breaks through the magic mirror warning Sabrina Spellman that the Void is coming for them before she dies. Then, Prudence Night (Tati Gabrielle) delivers news to Ambrose Spellman (Chance Perdomo) that the three orbs of the Ro-Cosmos have vanished — they had been consumed. After Sabrina Spellman tells her aunties Zelda Spellman (Miranda Otto) and Hilda Spellman (Lucy Davis) about the coming Void, they all head to the academy's observatory while Sabrina Spellman stays behind.
Sabrina Spellman's goal is to destroy the Void and she thinks of using the Imp but instead ends up trading it for Pandora's box with the trinket man. The box he gave her belonged to a daughter of gods, and once contained the universe's terrors. He also told her that it would be most effective if Pandora's box was opened from inside the Void but to be careful because it could suck her in too.
Sabrina Spellman decides to go into the Void through the magic mirror as Salem ends up at the academy and tells everyone that Sabrina is gone into the Void. After their efforts in teleporting her back fail, they instead make use of Sabrina Morningstar's body.
Inside the Void, Sabrina Spellman made it clear that she's angry that the Void had killed Sabrina Morningstar, and she opens Pandora's box, which results in the colored planets floating around her disappearing one by one. Back at the Spellman home though, Ambrose reveals that there is "one intangibility that we can call back to us" and that would be Sabrina Spellman's soul.
Hilda, Zelda, Nick and Ambrose then decide to bring Sabrina Spellman's soul into Sabrina Morningstar's body leaving Sabrina Spellman's body and the Pandora's box at the edge of the Void. But, Sabrina Spellman had not completely finished trapping the Void yet.
Prudence, using telepathy, tells Ambrose to come back to the observatory where they all notice that the Void had disappeared. While they had thought that what Sabrina Spellman did in the Void may have been the end of the final Eldritch terror, they were gravely mistaken.
It was finally Halloween and Sabrina Spellman's birthday but odd things begin to happen — her alarm clock and her pancakes go missing. Down in hell, Lilith (Michelle Gomez) meets with Lucifer Morningstar (Luke Cook) to give him information in exchange for him giving her, her powers back. Lilith lets Lucifer know that the Queen, his daughter, Sabrina Morningstar was obliterated by the Void and that the Spellman witches were using her body as a vessel for Sabrina Spellman's soul.
Caliban (Sam Corlett), Sabrina Morningstar's widower didn't take the news too well and he demands that Lucifer do something about it and kill Sabrina Spellman so they can give Sabrina Morningstar the Queen's burial she deserves. Lilith knew exactly where the Spellmans would be that night and that they would be unarmed, so Lucifer and Caliban's army of miners — one of whom was Mr Kinkle (Christopher Rosamond), Harvey Kinkle's (Ross Lynch) father — head to the Spellman home.
Sabrina Spellman's birthday celebration takes a wild turn as after her birthday cake disappears, the family is met with the wrath of Lucifer and his army. When Sabrina Spellman tells Lucifer that it's true that her soul was in his daughter's body, Lucifer demands that Sabrina Spellman bind her magics with a spell and give herself up to them.
But when Ambrose takes out his wand to defend the family, the army of possessed miners make their way to attack Sabrina Spellman only to disappear when she raises her arms in defense. Lucifer goes back to hell after his army is defeated and walks right into his death as Lilith takes revenge for him not keeping his word and giving her, her powers back.
After stabbing Lucifer in the back twice, Lilith decides to drink his all-powerful celestial blood and banish him from the Courts of Hell and cast him to wander the mortal realm like the "beggar" he is.
Sabrina Spellman has no idea where any of the people she made disappear had gone to — the angrier she got, the more things started to disappear. Later, Ambrose's scan revealed that when her family had sucked her soul into Sabrina Morningstar's body, they had sucked some of the Void into her as well. Not wanting to hurt anyone,
Sabrina Spellman decides to banish herself "far far away" to the Mountain of Madness. Nick decides that they should finish what Sabrina Spellman had started within the Void with Pandora's box and decided to bring her body and the box back home. Using the half of the locket that he had given her, he was able to use it as a beacon along with a divination spell to do just that.
At the Mountain of Madness, Sabrina decides to take the help of Father Blackwood so she could learn how to contain and control the Void within her. Two weeks later, with the help of Salem, Ambrose and Rosalind Walker (Jaz Sinclair), Prudence and Agatha (Adeline Rudolph) make it to the mountain to find a quiet Sabrina Spellman who had taken a vow of silence to withhold the Void within her.
Using their powers, Agatha, Rosalind and Prudence find out the truth — Father Blackwood is looking for the rest of the Void that's trapped in space and he plans to bring it down to Earth to bring it together with the Void that is inside of Sabrina Spellman. He wants to break her down and rip it out of her before he consumes it to wield its power — the table that Sabrina was sitting on was in fact a sacrificial altar.
While Agatha, Rosalind and Prudence try to get Sabrina to come with them by force, she stops herself resulting in the Void taking control and Rosalind and Prudence disappear. Sabrina looks Ambrose in the eye and says, "I will see you again cousin, at the end."
Sabrina had told Ambrose telepathically that Father Blackwood was going to sacrifice her in three days on the winter solstice. She also told him exactly when they should return to her — "when the poles of the Earth are furthest away from the sun, and the Void is if not containable perhaps controllable." This is when Nick shows up at the Spellman home with Sabrina Spellman's body in hand from the Void.
Later, when the gang gets to the Mountain of Madness, they manipulate Blackwood telling him that since it is the Void he wants, he can take the majority of it that is present in Pandora's box. When Blackwood takes the box but ends up with no eyes because it wasn't actually Pandora's box, but a common mystery box rigged with simple gun powder. With that, he was defeated.
Sabrina Spellman tells her aunt Zelda that she has to perform the sacrifice anyway, making it very clear that cutting her open was the only way to drain the Void out of her and into the gateway. It won't start to devour everything because Sabrina will be able to contain the gateway long enough for Ambrose and Harvey to go inside it and find everyone that had disappeared, grab them and bring them back out alive.
She'd also bring the rest of the Eldritch terrors into the Void to get rid of them forever. Nick was to go in within with the Pandora's Box too, and once everyone's back out, he's to open the box to draw in what's left of the Void and then shut it before he's pulled in.
While all of this goes smoothly, Sabrina Spellman ends up dying on the sacrificial altar ending the story of the Eldritch terrors for good. That's how the series finale plays out with its last part seeing the emotional burial of Sabrina Edwina Diana Spellman and Morningstar.
Prudence ends up killing her father, Blackwood so he doesn't cause any more trouble for the coven and that ends the Eldritch gospel. As for Sabrina, she sits in Sweet Hereafter with Nick who sacrificed his own life to be with her in Hereafter forever.
