'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Part 3: Hell is under new but shaky management as the Pagans hunt for blood
This article contains spoilers for 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Part 3
The anticipated Part 3 of Netflix thriller 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' kept to its promise of a sexy scary narrative chronicling the power struggle to claim the throne of Hell. While viewers do get visual treats, such as amazing direction, impeccable costumes, and hellish drama, we wonder if it was too much too soon. Part 3 consists of eight episodes and if it were up to us, we would have hoped that each of those episodes be halved. The narrative in each episode reveals too much information in one-go along with hiding more secrets to be uncovered in the next one, leaving the viewer struggling to find the point of the episode they're watching.
While in Part 2, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) vows to bring back her boyfriend Nicholas Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood) from hell, she seems to successfully do so in Part 3 with the help of her friends. The Fright Club, consisting of Theo Putnam (Lachlan Watson), Harvey Kinkle (Ross Lynch) and Rosalind (Jaz Sinclair) and Sabrina dedicate witch power and mortal will to the efforts of destroying the corrupt Faustus Blackwood(Richard Coyle), Lucifer Morningstar the Dark Lord and the Pagans out for witch blood.
As the foursome make it to Hell, Sabrina is challenged by Caliban, the Native Son of the Inferno to the throne of Hell (Sam Corlett). With the promise of reformation of Hell and the obstacle of her Queenship being challenged by Caliban, she agrees to the Arthurian Quest for the Unholy Regalia. The Unholy Regalia consists of the three most powerful occult objects in history: the crown of King Herod, the Bowl of Pontius Pilate and Judas Iscariot's 30 silver coins used to betray Jesus. Sabrina is able to retrieve the bowl but is tricked by Caliban when it comes to the crown and the silver resulting in the fall of the House of Morningstar in the crypts of hell.
Meanwhile, the Church of Night is now under the guidance of Directrix Zelda Spellman(Miranda Otto), Sabrina's aunt and the coven seems to be getting sick. The Pagans are out to hurt the coven in search of witch blood to bring back to life The Green Man, the oldest of Gods and the witch reform is in great danger. With Sabrina not wanting to be the Queen of Hell yet wanting the powers of being a witch manages to bring Hell to earth for her family and friends - both mortal and witch alike. With the Pagans at the center towards the end of Part 3, the narrative gets a little shaky and forceful. A random intrusion from a group of carnival pagans overshadows Sabrina's need to restore balance to all the realms of Heaven, Earth and Hell.
Meanwhile, we see Ambrose (Chance Perdomo) and Prudence (Tati Gabrielle) in search of Father Faustus Blackwood who, yes you guessed it, comes back for revenge resulting in too many deaths. Sabrina's mortal friends also experience the wrath of their witch friend's enemies and understand the powers of Lilith (Michelle Gomez) more than they need to. Although the character development of each important chess pawn is impeccable, the narrative sticks to the key ground obstacle of Sabrina unable to choose between the path of Light and Night.
Part 3 of 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' managed to expose us to the pits of Hell and its need for a crown bearer, but we think it would be much suited as a network show rather than that of a streaming service. All in all, viewers are in for a treat as Sabrina, the daughter of Lucifer Morning star goes on the fiery journey to claim her blood right to the throne whilst destroying and saving the realms simultaneously. It's also safe to say that fans of Archieverse will rejoice in the 'Riverdale' references and cast cameo, but we leave that as a surprise treat.
All episodes of Part 3 of 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' are now streaming on Netflix.
