'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Part 3 Episode 4: The Pagans are shaping up to be the big bad villains
Spoiler Alert follows for Episode 4 of 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina' Part 3
With Lucifer dethroned and imprisoned in the Academy of Unseen Arts, the coven is losing its powers. With a new threat in town, this poses a dangerous situation as the fourth episode reveals just how potent the new guests in Greendale can be.
Sabrina continues to juggle her position as the Queen of Hell and as a teenager in the town of Greendale, while her aunts try to figure out why the coven's powers are diminishing.
It is Ambrose who learns that the coven's powers come from Lucifer and without him bestowing the powers upon them, the witches will soon turn mortal.
However, when they learn that Lucifer's power is celestial and not satanic, they try to get the blood of another angel — enough so each member can have a sip in order to restore their powers.
Unfortunately, Dorian Gray — whose face is deforming more each day — drinks the blood that Sabrina has collected.
They are left with only a vial of angel blood — certainly not enough for the whole coven. This is when Hilda suggests doing the ritual of moon bathing while anointed with celestial oils, and in this instance, angel blood.
The witches prepare for their Hare Moon festival and the moon bathing ritual that would come later on. This is when they get interrupted by the new guests — or as we now know — the pagans.
It is clear from the onset that the pagans don't see eye to eye with the witches. They even deduce that something is wrong and that the witches are without powers.
The snake charmer among them has cursed Roz, and though Harvey and Theo desperately search for a cure — including Sabrina's help — she turns to stone.
While the pagans and witches have lunch together, one of them also casts a spell on Hilda. We don't know what the spell does, but we did catch the Latin terms for "metamorphosis" and "spider", and it could mean that Hilda could be undergoing a Kafka-esque transformation into a spider soon enough.
In the midst of all this, Nick, who is still struggling with the remnants of the Dark Lord in his mind, takes to "cavorting with sex demons", which inevitably leads to tension with Sabrina. Nick also makes the mistake of killing a snake, which angers the pagans.
In an effort to appease them, the witches send Dorcas with a moon pie that Hilda baked, although this would prove to be a downfall.
While the coven performs its moon bathing ritual, the pagans do their own magic and eat the moon pie, effectively blocking the witches from absorbing the powers of the moon.
It is then that Zelda and the others come to the realization that in order to defeat the pagans — who have come to take back the earth — they must free Lucifer, after all, he is seemingly the lesser of two evils here.
When Sabrina goes to talk to him, she sees that Lucifer has escaped and Nick, lying on the ground frothing. Lucifer — knowing Nick's predicament — offered Nick satanic drugs in exchange for his freedom.
Will the witches be condemned by Lucifer? Or will he help them, albeit with a stringent list of demands? And what of the pagans? If there is anything we have learned from this episode, it is that the pagans are not to be trifled with.
