'Chicago P.D.' Season 7 midseason finale's UpStead moment has fans calling Jay and Hailey 'Romeo and Juliet'

The only silver lining of Jay being shot is Hailey's reaction to it, which helped confirm fans' speculations about the two of them being in love.

This article contains spoilers for Season 7 Episode 9.

Ahead of the mid-season finale of the NBC procedural, 'Chicago P.D.'s Season 7, the network had teased that the episode will show how “Halstead’s secret ongoing relationship with a woman connected to another case puts him in jeopardy." But that forewarning had nothing on Upstead fans as they got the ultimate gift in the fall finale of this season. UpStead is the famous ship comprising  Hailey Upton and Jay Halstead, two members of the eponymous police department who have been speculated to have feelings beyond the platonic kind for each other. And tonight's episode finally nailed the coffin on the whole will-they-won't-they aspect of things as Jay getting shot brought out all the confirmation of some heavy-set feelings that Hailey might harbor for her colleague.

Tonight's mid-season finale ended on the cliffhanger of Jay getting shot by Angela, the girlfriend of a wrongly convicted guy who died after being battered in custody. It was after his death that the department discovered that the facial match on the dead man was wrong, but to cover up their own mistakes, they kept the truth suppressed. The guilt was however too much for Jay to live with, so he started helping out Angela to make up for the injustice done to her boyfriend, but the woman had her revenge in the end by shooting him and leaving him bleeding out pretty bad.

But as we hang on the cliff of a month's worth of suspicions over Jay's fate, the only silver lining here is Hailey's reaction to him being shot, which helped confirm fans' speculations about the two of them being in love. While one fan simple shared on Twitter that the whole UpStead sene with Hailey sobbing and asking Jay to stay with her as he gets transported to the hospital is reminiscent of Shakespearean romantic tragedies like 'Romeo and Juliet', others are concerned about Hailey's torment in this entire situation.

"It's Jay's moment, but why am i worried about Hailey? Is it possible that they are preparing a twist and the real danger is in another character? Like Hailey, who is determined to save Jay #ChicagoPD #Upstead," shared another fan on Twitter. Hitting everyone right in the feels, a third fan noted how this was a long time coming. "y’all ever just look at upstead in a scene together when they’re smiling at each other and can feel how much they truly care about each other and have romantic feelings for each other?" they shared on the social media platform.

'Chicago P.D.' returns from its Season 7 fall hiatus on January 8, 2020, only on NBC.
