Spoiler alert for ' Season 7 Episode 16 - 'Intimate Violence'

This week's episode of 'Chicago PD' sees the Intelligence Unit deal with a case of an armed robbery that turns into a homicide case when the man shot by one of the perpetrators ends up dead. This is one of the few cases where we don't see a clean solution to the case but instead, we see Detectives Jay Halstead and Hailey Upton ensure that a domestic abuser ends up behind bars.

When Halstead first interviews a witness, she tells him that she was at the store just before the robbery went down and rushed to the man who was shot to help. However, Intelligence later finds out that the woman was casing the place and that her name is Michelle Sullivan.

It turns out, Michelle is married to Shane who has priors for armed robbery. The team is sure he is behind the armed robbery they are investigating, but Michelle won't give her husband up.

Upton and Halstead later find out that Michelle was abused by her husband and get her to wear a wire and cooperate with them in exchange for protection. Michelle helps at first but on the day that Intelligence plans to catch Shane and his fellow perpetrators in action during a robbery, Michelle decides to try and convince her husband to stay.

Unfortunately, he gets violent and Halstead wants to break the situation up and though Upton resists, she goes along with him. When Michelle says that Shane grabbed her hand, Upton and Halstead arrest Shane.

Halstead talks to Voight on 'Chicago PD' (NBC)

Voight may be upset that their sting operation did not go as planned and as Halstead tries to explain the situation to him, the former agrees that Halstead does the right thing and that he has made his peace with it.

Later, after Shane is released, Halstead goes to check on Michelle and sees her badly beaten up. When Shane threatens him, Halstead punches him and takes Michelle out of the house. He then buys tickets to Arizona for both Michelle and her daughter.

When Halstead meets Upton at a bar later, he tells her that he doesn't know how she went through it. We find out that Upton grew up in an abusive household - her dad would come home drunk and beat her mother up. She tells Halstead that as a child she wished someone would come in and put her dad in his place - essentially what Halstead did with the Sullivans - and that Halstead is a good guy.

The good news is that Halstead and Upton are partnered up again at Upton's request. Moreover, we see that the feud between Halstead and Voight is over now that the boss has understood that Halstead wants to do things by the book.

'Chicago PD' airs on Wednesday nights on NBC at 10/9c.
