With 'Chicago P.D. returning for the second innings of its seventh season, the first episode of 2020 focused on Kevin Atwater (Laroyce Hawkins). We have noticed this season that the writers have been focusing more on Atwater and his personal story as a black cop in Chicago.

This episode revolved around 'The Intelligence Unit' unwinding the death of a businessman who was gunned down in his home. Soon, Atwater discovers that his brother, Jordan may be involved in the case.

Though Atwater has been part of the show since its first season, he only made it to the Intelligence Unit further on into the show. The show also offers glimpses into his inner life at home — he is the sole caretaker for his younger siblings, so it becomes easy to assess how hard it may have been for Atwater to know of Jordan's involvement.

Though Jordan becomes the prime suspect after surveillance footage shows him walking away from the crime scene with a gun, he is later cleared when Atwater and the others realize that the real killer has been Jordan's girlfriend.

At the end of the episode, when Atwater tries to call Jordan, his younger brother does not answer his call. However, it remains unclear whether Jordan gets into more trouble or does he leaves town again.

While Jordan's situation is worrisome, we applaud the writers of 'Chicago P.D.' for bringing the focus onto Kevin Atwater. Earlier this season, we also saw him dealing with being a black cop — the adversity he faces from his community and the real nuance he shows while dealing with African-American suspects.

One thing that motivates him is his family and for Atwater, Jordan is sure to take priority. Whether Jordan is missing by his own choice, or whether he was kidnapped, Atwater is sure to leave no stone unturned in his quest to figure out the real story.

'Chicago P.D.' airs on NBC on Wednesday nights.
