'Chicago Med' is finally returning to NBC with new episodes this Wednesday after its winter break. Many viewers were left surprised and shocked when all three shows from NBC's 'Chicago' franchise went on the winter break with just two episodes each of the new seasons being aired.

The current seasons are all shorter due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which has been featured heavily in the new season of 'Chicago Med', with nurse April Sexton (Yaya DaCosta) being the character that viewers get to see working in the response team. However, her former boyfriend, Dr Ethan Choi (Brian Tee), may come in the way of that.

What happened previously?

Ethan and April are currently in a good place considering what they went through. They first started dating and then split up because of Ethan's sister, only to get back together again. This time, Ethan was adamant about having a child, but April was not so sure. Even so, she went along and got to the point where she made herself sick getting extra fertility treatments so that they could finally have a child. Things between them got worse when Ethan left to go on duty, during which April shared a kiss with the new doctor, Dr Marcel Crockett (Dominic Rains). Crockett may have truly liked April, and when Ethan finds out about the kiss, the two doctors even fight in the Emergency Department (ED).

Ethan and April did split up but after Ethan was in a hostage situation at the end of Season 5, he came to realize that he still has feelings for April. The two may not be going out now, but it is clear that they care deeply for each other, with Ethan having April's back as she works with Covid-19 patients.

Meanwhile, Season 6 brought a big career move for Ethan, with him being promoted to the role of Chief of ED, prompting the ire of fellow ED doctor Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss). However, Will was later told that he was too temperamental to even be considered for the position.

What to expect in Episode 3?

The official synopsis for Season 6 Episode 3 of 'Chicago Med' states: "Dr Charles and April team up to take on a mysterious patient in the ED. Dr Halstead is forced to make a life-or-death decision for one of his trial patients. Dr Marcel is confronted by his past when a former acquaintance is brought into the ED."

That might be a bit surprising to read since April is in the Covid-19 response team, which means that it is unlikely that she will be paired up with the psychiatrist, Dr Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt). However, the promo for the episode shows that Ethan will be forcing April off of the Covid-19 response team. The hospital protocol requires the staff on the Covid response team to be rotated, but April wants to work only in the team and be the relief that many patients in their last moments will require. Ethan's decision may be coming from his concern for April's safety, but it may anger her, and thus lead to another fight between April and Ethan.

'Chicago Med' returns to NBC with new episodes this Wednesday, January 6, at 8/7c.
