When will 'Chicago Fire' Season 9 Episode 3 air? Here's what to expect when NBC drama returns after winter break
2020 has been a difficult year and it is no different for fans of NBC's 'Chicago' franchise. Not only did the previous seasons of 'Chicago Med', 'Chicago PD', and 'Chicago Fire' end prematurely because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the fall seasons for all three shows arrived much later than usual. Moreover, it was only after the second episodes for all three shows aired that viewers came to know their wait for new episodes will be longer as the shows go on their winter breaks.
The original show of the 'Chicago' franchise, 'Chicago Fire' is now in its ninth season and while we were looking forward to more episodes, the NBC emergency responders drama will only return in January 2021. 'Chicago Fire' is perhaps the one that has had to change the least due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests, but the show has had to make its own changes. For instance, after paramedic Emily Foster (Annie Ilonzeh) left for medical school, a new paramedic, Gianna Mackey (Adriyan Rae) has joined. In the second episode of Season 9, we thought 'Chicago Fire' was going to lose another paramedic, but Mackey decided to stay, making both Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer) and Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) happy.
Meanwhile, Brett could have been happier. After some very awkward moments, she finally acted on her feelings for Captain Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) and kissed him. While it looked like the Brettsey ship was all set for smooth sailing, Brett's question about Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) complicated things. Does this mean the end of the Brett and Casey relationship, or will Casey be able to convince Brett that his feelings for Brett are real and his history with Gabby won't come in between them?
The ninth season also showed us that Stella Kidd's (Miranda Rae Mayo) Girls on Fire program as well as her relationship with Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) is going strong. However, Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) has asked her to take the lieutenant's exam and we wonder whether this may create tension between them. We hope not because Stellaride will make a terrific firefighting power couple. Kidd's rise in rank may also create friction between her colleagues who are senior to her.
So, when will 'Chicago Fire' return with new episodes? Season 9 was already going to be shorter than previous seasons with just 15 episodes, but due to repeated production halts due to positive Covid-19 tests, we worry that the season may be even shorter. Nevertheless, the NBC drama is set to return to our screens in the first week of the new year as 'Chicago' Wednesdays are set to return to NBC on January 6.
'Chicago Fire' had already been renewed up until Season 11 earlier this year, so we know that the show will keep going. With Mackey, Darren Ritter (Daniel Kyri) and Blake Gallo (Alberto Rosende), the show is already shaping up its next generation of emergency responders, so we expect the show has a long future.
'Chicago Fire' returns with new episodes to NBC on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, and will air at 9/8c.
