'Chicago Fire' Season 8: What will happen to Brett and Kyle's engagement now that she is back in Chicago?

In this week's episode, Brett decides that she is not happy in Fowlerton and Kyle agrees that she should go back to Chicago. But what does that mean for their relationship?

In the season seven finale of 'Chicago Fire', chaplain Kyle Sheffield tells Brett that he is moving to Indiana and proposes to her. She accepts and in the season eight premiere last week, we see that she has moved back to her hometown of Fowlerton, Indiana and is living with Kyle.

However, Brett's unhappiness is obvious even in the first episode. She was injured during a boiler explosion from the season premiere, and when the episode fast-forwards to three months later, her cast is taken off. At this point, Brett decides she wants to join the Fowlerton Fire Department.

We also learn that the Fowlerton Fire Department is nowhere near active as Brett's firehouse in Chicago. Kyle thinks that being a chaplain's wife will be quite a full-time job as well.

However, in the second episode, Brett joins the Fowlerton FD and nothing happens during the shift. She also meets Hope, her friend who was a paramedic at 51 and tried to get Stella Kidd fired but was fired herself.

At one point, she walks in on a conversation between Kyle and Hope and while Kyle tells Brett "nothing happened", we can't help but think we will see more of Eloise Mumford as Hope this season.

Kyle also tells Brett that he knows she is not happy in Indiana and as Stella and Emily come to Indiana to take her back to Chicago, she readily agrees.

We don't see how Kyle's and Brett's conversation end, so we don't know for sure whether they are still engaged or decided to break up before Brett moves back to Chicago. For now, we think that they are going to try long-distance.

Season 8 could see something happen between Brett and Casey on 'Chicago Fire' (NBC)

As usual, it might end up with Kyle and Brett's relationship suffering because of the distance. Perhaps, Brett will keep having doubts about Kyle and Hope, to the point that she either breaks up with him because of her mistrust or because her doubts actually end up being true.

Certainly, with Brett back as a paramedic in 51, she is going to be really busy at work and we know Kyle is really busy with his work as well. This most definitely would take a toll on their relationship.

And who knows? Casey might still have feelings for Brett and with them working together, there's a good possibility of them finding out about each other's feelings.

'Chicago Fire' airs on Wednesday nights on NBC.
