'Charmed' Season 2 Episode 2: Macy and Harry go on a road-trip as Mel and Maggie cope with the loss of their father

The second episode also gave us the name of who could be the big bad this season, and we can't help but love the slow burn
PUBLISHED OCT 19, 2019

The 'Charmed' reboot returned for its second season last week and we get to see more of the sisters' new world in this episode. To refresh, the sisters were attacked by a demon assassin who looked like Harry and are moved, along with their manor to Seattle, where they have to live from now on for their own safety.

The episode starts with a weird dream where Macy dreaming about Harry (as we predicted) telling her that them being together is destiny. But this is dark Harry as he tells her she needs to tell him where she is. This is still the aftereffect from Macy having been shot with a dart by the demon assassin/dark Harry in the premiere episode.

Meanwhile, the real Harry is looking for clues in the wreckage of last week's fight when Macy comes to him saying there is another victim. Macy uses some good detective skills to inform her sister that a little girl who is a witch was staying at the inn from last week where the sisters were attacked. Meanwhile, Maggie discovers an Instagram post from Hilltown her sorority house is holding a vigil for her. She tells Mel that everyone back in Hilltown thinks the sisters died in a house fire. But they're not the only ones who have obituaries in the Hilltown news website -- Maggie finds one for Santiago Vera, their dad (or in Maggie's case, the man she thought was her dad).

Harry's powers are still "wonky" from him absorbing the demon assassin's poison, so Macy and Harry go on a road trip to Oregon, where she suspects the little girl might be. But Macy is being weird -- courtesy of dark-Harry dreams -- and the real Harry can tell something is up but he is hiding something as well, he hasn't told the sisters that the face behind the mask of the demon assassin was his own. The two almost run across a woman who turns out to be a witch who has been attacked. Harry tries to save her but is unsuccessful.

Maggie is grieving over her father's death but Mel does not want to risk going for the funeral and exposing them to the assassin and says he is not worth it. Maggie wants to go, however and uses the Elders' portal to get there.

Mel goes to the Wiccan shop in the shared workspace and tries to steal materials for a spell and we sense the chemistry between Mel and the witch who runs the store. Macy and Harry disguise themselves to go to a "demon party" and she tells him about her dream, spurred on by how he looks. Meanwhile, Maggie also runs into this dark Harry while she goes for her father's funeral -- but she realizes this is not the real Harry although Mel shows up just in time to save her, having used the stolen herbs to make an invisibility potion.

Mel explains to Maggie that she covered for their absentee father in front of Maggie, but the bonding session is interrupted when the Elders' monitor shows two witches in distress in Oregon -- where Harry and Macy is. Back in Oregon, Macy can enter the demon party thanks to her demon half but Harry has to wait outside.

The sisters find out about dark Harry in this week's episode of 'Charmed' (The CW)

It turns out there is a figure known as The Rightful Heir, Zagan the Great -- a demon overload who died years ago, prophesized to rise again to lead the demons and it is this overload that has started the war against the witches. As the demons prepare to burn the girl, Macy steps forward and says they shouldn't burn the girl unless the demon overlord shows his face -- to buy time -- and tells them that she is Zagan. Just as she is asked to prove it, invisible Maggie and Mel bust through the doors. The girls and Harry manage to escape with the girl but they are caught on a CCTV camera.

Maggie decides to let go of the past and embrace "what is". She decides to fill in an application for a part-time job at the gym in the shared workspace so that they have a cover to access the Elders HQ and when she goes to give her application, she shares a nice moment with Jordan, who we met in the season premiere. We also get another nice moment between Harry and Macy as he tells her seeing the dark version of himself scared him.

The second episode was a solid continuation of the world set up in the last season. We also got a brief mention of who might be the season's overarching villain -- this also seems inspired from the original series, despite the showrunners intending to sever ties with it. We did not learn much more about dark Harry and the sisters and real Harry seem to think it's a shapeshifting demon, but we're not sure of that anymore.

New episodes of 'Charmed' airs on The CW on Friday night.
