'Charmed' Season 2: What new powers could the Vera sisters develop this season, if any?
The 'Charmed' reboot arrived on our screens last fall and the supernatural show returns for its second season next week. While the reboot faced a lot of flak even before it aired, with fans of the original show angered at the exclusion of the Halliwell sisters, the reboot did quite well and built up a fanbase for itself - and include some of the original fans. However, one of the criticisms the show faced was that it ran through plots that occurred through the 8 seasons of the OG show, and this included the powers of the sisters.
On the original show, the Halliwell started off with one power and then developed more powers that followed the same "science" as their original powers. For instance, Piper had the power of molecular immobilization, simply put, freezing, where she could slow down molecules to the point of freezing them. It was only in later seasons that she learns that she can speed up molecules as well, meaning she could cause objects to explode. In the comic books, she could melt things as well by distorting molecules of the objects. Phoebe - the original equivalent of Maggie - had the power of premonition and later developed empathy and levitation. Phoebe's empathy also evolved to a power called "Pathokinesis", where she could flood the mind of another person with thoughts and emotions that could incapacitate or kill them. She also gained the power to tap into others' magical powers. Prue (OG Macy) had the power of telekinesis, and later telematerializing as well as astral projection. However, as she was killed off midway through the series, we don't see more powers for her. Paige, the half-Whitelighter sister had powers that included telekinetic orbing - orbing of objects - and creating an orb shield.
In the first season of the reboot, Mel realizes she can manipulate time (and not molecules like Piper), meaning she can freeze time. She also quickly learns that she can speed up time as well. Maggie has empathic powers and can convert emotion into raw energy. Macy has telekinesis (as a witch) and gets other powers from the Source, which she presumably loses after the Source is taken out of her.
This leaves us to wonder if the Vera sisters gain more powers over the next season, what could they be? The most obvious is that Maggie could develop premonition and the ability to tap into others' magical powers. Her storyline is also very similar to Phoebe with the half-demon boyfriend plotline. Then there is Mel, who has already learned that she can speed up time. In what way can her powers develop? We think it could possibly be time travel. In the first season, Maggie and Mel are able to astrally project themselves into the past through a spell called "Call to a Restless Spirit." But it is possible, Mel is able to develop this power and learn how to do this without the use of the spell. Then there is Macy who has the power of telekinesis. Here it looks like she could develop the powers that Prue did - telematerializing and teleportation. We must remember that she is part-demon as well and this could mean she gets some demon-like powers, like perhaps, shape-shifting.
But beyond these powers that are similar to the powers the Vera sisters already have, they could gain some powers that are completely unrelated. Now that the Elders are gone, the Vera sisters are left in charge and so this status could mean the sisters develop powers the Elders had. Some of these powers we know from the original and the reboot includes orbing, invisibility, healing, force field creations, and portal creating. We also don't know yet whether Macy might have kept some of the powers from the source which included disintegrating objects and teleportation.
'Charmed' returns to The CW for its second season on Friday, October 11th.
