Who was Carson Dunn? Boy, 10, tragically dies after falling off floating structure at Camp Dearborn
MILFORD, MICHIGAN: A 10-year-old boy tragically died after falling off a play structure floating in the middle of a Michigan lake.
The incident occurred at Camp Dearborn in Milford at around 6 pm on Wednesday, July 6. Michigan State Police officers responded to the 626-acre recreational facility, which is about 40 miles northwest of Detroit, following reports of a child who was unresponsive and not breathing. According to witnesses, the victim, now identified as 10-year-old Carson Dunn, was playing with a piece of equipment located in the camp's main lake when he fell.

F/Lt Michael Shaw with the Michigan State Police revealed how the boy "ended up falling down to the bottom of it and ending up in the lake," adding, "The lifeguard was there immediately, pulled him out of the water, found out he was unresponsive, they ended up getting him to the beach." According to MSP, Milford fire officials transported the child to the hospital after finding a pulse. "The child arrived at the hospital with CPR in progress, however, lifesaving efforts were ultimately unsuccessful," MSP said.
The boy was identified by his mother on Thursday, July 7, as Carson Dunn. Speaking to the New York Post, Carly Burgess said her son died from a blunt force trauma to the chest after hitting a platform while falling off the aforementioned structure. State police said an autopsy was conducted on Thursday. "While we are awaiting the final results, it still appears that this was a tragic accident," MSP said in a tweet. "Our prayers go out to the family who lost their loved one way too soon."

Burgess, who also has a younger child, described Carson as "an amazing son and brother” who loved basketball and had just finished fourth grade in June. “He was very good at math and was a caring friend,” the devastated mother added. “I am at peace knowing he is in God's hands now.”
Speaking to 7 Action News, Burgess said her son attended Country Oaks Elementary in the Huron Valley School District, where he played basketball on Coach Brian Kennedy’s team, the Hot Shots. “He always has a smile. Always upbeat. You could just tell when he was in there with his ball he was having the time of his life,” Kennedy said of Carson.
Officials for the Dearborn Department of Parks and Recreation released a statement on Thursday addressing the incident. "We are heartbroken and saddened about the tragic incident at the Ripping the Waters aqua park yesterday," it said. "The city of Dearborn sends its deepest sympathies to the family, and we are doing everything we can to support the Michigan State Police’s investigation into the incident."

Funeral services were planned for young Carson, and a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help his grieving family. "Everyone who had the privilege of knowing Carson would agree he was an awesome kid who was full of love for God, his family, and his friends," the fundraising page stated.
