DAVIS, CALIFORNIA: A suspect has been arrested in connection with three stabbings in a California university town. The attack left two men dead and a woman seriously injured. Police have now arrested former UC Davis student, 21-year-old Carlos Dominguez, just a block away from where a student was killed last week.

The first attack took place on April 27 when David Breaux, a homeless man, was found on a bench near the University of California in Davis campus. He had been "stabbed many times." The second attack took place on April 29 when UC Davis senior Karim Abou Najm, 20, was stabbed to death while he was returning home from an undergraduate awards ceremony. On May 1, a 64-year-old woman was stabbed through a tent at a homeless encampment. She is in critical condition.

Who is Carlos Dominguez?

Not much is known about Dominguez at this time except that on Thursday, May 4, he was charged with two counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. He has been booked into Yolo County Jail, cops said. "The behavior was quite unusual in a circumstance like this. He was compliant during the entire process," Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said. "He was reserved and spoke for a long time." Davis Mayor Will Arnold said, "The murderer is off the streets and our families can sleep easier."

Multiple patrol officers stopped Dominguez on Wednesday, May 3, following which he agreed to come back to the station. A "large hunting-style knife" consistent with witness accounts was found in his backpack. "There was a guy walking along and a whole bunch of police cars came down Pine Street and they stopped a guy who fit the description, carrying a backpack," Michael Shearer, who lives in Davis, told the Sacramento Bee, recalling the arrest. He added, "There wasn't any altercation, but they talked to him for five or 10 minutes and then they put him in the police car and they drove away."

'He came toward me rather briskly'

The man who first spotted Dominguez in a park told the Davis Enterprise, "He made eye contact with me and came toward me rather briskly. He was walking around sort of aimlessly, which I thought was odd." Before the suspect's arrest, he had been described as "a light-skinned male, possibly Hispanic, 5' 6'' to 5' 9'' tall, 19 to 23 years of age, with long curly loose hair."

Isaac Chessman, who lived in a neighboring tent, said he and his partner Christine Berrios heard a woman screaming for help. Chessman said he believed he may have encountered Dominguez earlier that day. "So we're sitting in front of the tent, and I said, "Babe, this isn't feeling right," and I see a dude run across the way and started running, but he would stop along every tree to blend in with the tree because it's dark. I noticed that because that's something you would do if you're scoping something out," he said, according to Daily Mail

"I said, "Hey bro," and he starts walking normal, and then I said, "You look like the dude they've been describing that's been stabbing people." He takes off and I started to take off after he and my wife is like, "Don't leave me here"," Chessman added.

Shearer said the stabbings have horrified the community. "Everybody's terrified," he said. "Really, I mean, this isn't normal, and it's so arbitrary. You just don't know," he added.
