One of the biggest stars in boxing, Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, made his 2020 return on Saturday, December 19, as he challenged, Callum Smith for a pair of super-middleweight titles. Álvarez won by unanimous decision as he scored 119-109 (twice) and 117-111, as the secondary WBA titleholder, takes home the WBC crown. The fight took place inside the Alamodome in San Antonio with a socially distant crowd as Alvarez, a secondary WBA titleholder, looks to add Smith's full WBA title at 168 pounds and the vacant WBC crown.

This was Alvarez's first fight since blocking Sergey Kovalev in the 11th round in November 2019 to claim the WBO light heavyweight title and becoming a four-division world champion. He returns to the 168-pound division for the second time after defeating Rocky Fielding with a third-round TKO in December 2018 to take the WBA (Regular) super-middleweight title at Madison Square Garden, New York.

According to Total Sportal, Alvarez will take at least $20 million for fighting Callum Smith. Previously, Alvarez was making $35 million per fight under his 11-fight, $365 million contract with DAZN, which was severed in November. DAZN had refused to pay Alvarez his $35 million guarantee due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, it's unclear whether DAZN's decision to offer Canelo vs Smith on traditional pay-per-view could boost the payouts for both the fighters. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Alvarez's net worth is $140 million. Between June 2018 and June 2019, Alvarez made $95 million from his empire. In the following 12 months, he earned $40 million.

Smith has held the WBA (Super) and Ring magazine super-middleweight titles since 2018. He has also won the World Boxing Super Series super-middleweight tournament in the same year. In the regional level, he has held the European and British super-middleweight titles between 2015 and 2017. His earnings will reportedly come in between $8 million and $10 million.

As soon as the match started fans started supporting their favorite player. One user commented, "Canelo is parrying those head shots. Now Canelo is coming for the body. Smith is being outlanded because most of his shots are not landing at 19%. Just like with Kovalev he makes him miss and counter punches. #CaneloSmith." While another one said, "Canelo just too much!! Smith giving it everything he have. He hanging in there but man Canelo just on another level." Another one wrote, "Smith is over rated. No, Canelo is not getting better. Smith is just not a threat to Canelo." While another one said, "Anyone saying Smith hasn’t give this his all is doing Canelo an injustice. He has really just been that good tonight."

While another one said, "canelo won but the fight was kinda a*s". One fan said, "best fighter won. Callum had no idea what to do against the attacking Canelo. looked lost." Sharing a picture from a TV set another one wrote, "Not that we ever even wondered who would win the #CaneloSmith fight but... @Canelo won... just letting y'all know... for reassurance."
