Brittany Murphy’s dad Angelo Bertolotti said on his deathbed he’d ‘lost hope’ in solving her mysterious death
Brittany Murphy’s father, who died in 2019, was reportedly devasted over the fact that he wouldn’t be able to know what happened to his daughter before his death. The famous actress died in 2009 under mysterious circumstances. After her death at the age of 32, the Los Angeles coroner stated she died because of pneumonia, anemia, and drug intoxication. But Angelo Bertolotti, her dad, did not think so. He even started a legal fight against the Los Angeles Coroners Court to get her body exhumed and discover the real cause of death. But two years ago, before his death, he had to give up.
Now a new two-part documentary by HBO Max will reportedly explore Murphy’s life and death. It has been said Bertolotti as well as other family members of the ‘Just Married’ star believes her mother, Sharon, might have more answers related to her death. But no one knows where is she now as a family insider fears she may not be alive.

Angelo in an unearthed interview said, as reported by The Sun, “I have no idea what happened, I wish I did. I think about my daughter a lot, think about the nice times we’ve had together. But I’ve lost hope. I still don’t know who’s responsible for her death - it makes me feel pretty, well, very bad. I thought I’d solved it, but I was getting a lot of publicity from it, and I had to back off from it. I kept in touch with the situation as long as I could, but we need Sharon. I’ve not seen her for years, she’s disappeared somewhere, no one knows.”
The grieving father also said that he wished he had died instead of his daughter. He added, “It’s difficult for me, as I’ve outlived everyone around me. A lot of people I know have passed away first. I live the best I can, but the government are very good to me. I don’t really speak to anyone, it’s a cruel situation.”
Murphy was shockingly found dead in the bathroom of her Los Angeles home on December 20, 2009. Five months later, her 40-year-old husband, Simon Monjack, was also found dead in similar circumstances. At the time, the pair’s cause of death was said to be pneumonia, anemia, and drug intoxication, after dozens of prescription pills were found in their system.
But since Bertolotti was not satisfied with the results, he secured the release of hair, blood, and tissue samples in November 2013 and sent them for examination by The Carlson Company. The new report denied the earlier one and instead claimed it was of poisoning. "If we were to eliminate the possibility of a simultaneous accidental heavy metals exposure to the sample donor then the only logical explanation would be an exposure to these metals (toxins) administered by a third party perpetrator with likely criminal intent," the report added.
But the same year, Sharon dismissed the claims that her daughter died due to poisoning. She told The Hollywood Reporter: “We will never know for sure. However, we do know the Los Angeles County Coroner did extensive tests and found that she died of natural causes. And now she is a real living angel in heaven.”
