A former Army captain who is running for Congress as a Democrat was seen in a resurfaced 2019 video stripping down at an anti-war burlesque show in Brooklyn.

Brittany DeBarros, 32, a native of Staten Island who is running against incumbent New York State Rep Nicole Malliotakis, was seen on video dancing to Edwin Starr’s protest song 'War' at Starr Bar in Flatbush. The former captain and Afghan war veteran, who is running on a Democratic socialist platform, started her routine wearing a camouflage uniform and removed it piece by piece to show nothing but red lingerie and pasties, the New York Post reported.

Speaking to the newspaper, veteran Democratic strategist Hank Sheinkopf said the clip may not go down well with Staten Island voters considering it mocks the armed forces and the majority of the borough is pro-military and law enforcement. "In the era when Democrats are seen as disorderly and out of control, all this does is make it more difficult to elect Democrats," Sheinkopf told The Post. "In Staten Island where you have a disproportionate number of police, corrections officers, and other law enforcement personnel who have served in the armed forces, this burlesque making fun of the armed forces will not go over well."

The former Army officer was flanked by three other performers as she went topless in the December 2019 performance. She later danced and twerked to the Disney song 'Let it Go' with nothing but pasties covering her chest.

Who is Brittany DeBarros?

Brittany Ramos DeBarros is an Afro-Latina combat veteran and activist who is running for Congress as a Democrat. She was deployed to Afghanistan back in 2012 but eventually became a harsh critic of the conflict. At the time of her burlesque show, DeBarros said on social media that she was nearly court-martialed for 'posting facts' about the war while she was still enlisted. "Furthermore, I was called a traitor and almost court-martialed for posting literal facts about what our military is up to. Now the #AfghanistanPapers prove that officials were knowingly LYING about this war. I would like to know what’s going to happen to them," she tweeted in December 2019.

Addressing the Brooklyn crowd in the video, DeBarros said, "I was a captain in the Army. I was deployed to Afghanistan. I was like, 'This is bulls**t." She added that she became committed to "anti-war, anti-imperialist [and] anti-racist work" after returning to civilian life in the US. DeBarros shared a video of the performance to her Instagram alongside the hashtag #dropbootiesnotbombs. "When you see me pause and cover my face in the first video it's because I'm actually overwhelmed with emotion and how liberating it felt to angrily tear that uniform off in front of an audience," she wrote. "I'm proud of this show and it still brings me so much joy to watch myself step into long under-nourished pleasure and passion."

FEC records show that the congressional candidate has already raised over $350,000 since announcing her candidacy in January, with the majority coming from donors out of New York state. The comfortable cash reserve will help her fight the Democrat primary against the district's former representative, Max Rose, who is a decorated first lieutenant and fellow military veteran.
