Spoilers for Season 5 Episode 2 'We Didn't Start the Fire'

After trying to weasel their way into obtaining the hidden-phone in the FBI's vent, two out of the five rogue agents come inches close to a bomb explosion - saved by the genius of Bill Nye, the Science Guy. They are able to diffuse the bomb in time, and even manage a quick chat with Matthew Weitz (Aaron Abrams), which helps them in sending instructions to help Afrin safely retrieve the phone.

Luckily, stopping one disaster doesn't help him avoid the imminent one - where the phone is busted by Madeline Burke's (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) new mercenaries and they force Matthew to come with them. But the worst is yet to come as speculation runs rife over what they are going to do with the FBI director?

The easiest deduction is Matthew will be held hostage to get the five former agents to out themselves; it has already been established that Matthew has a soft spot for the formerly six people that Madeline had framed, thus leading to them becoming fugitives from the FBI. But there was no direct communication between Matthew and the agents to substantiate the claims of Matthew secretly helping them; that is, until now.

The second episode of the final season sees Madeline mandate trackers on phones, and blackmail employees to spy on Matthew through Afrin, and that's how they get a hold of the phone - because Brianna offers to help Afrin genuinely though. The phone is confiscated mid-transmitting data to the rogue agents' devices, so for all we know, there's a lingering possibility that their location will be once again outed. Does that mean another drone attack?

Or will it be much worse and end with torturing Matthew for information, the CIA did with Rich Dotcom (Ennis Esmer) at the black site? Ironic, considering it was Matthew who had ordered Rich be held captive to not seem suspicious, which he defends claiming he had no idea he would be tortured in a black site. But knowing what CIA protocols can unofficially escalate to, it's no secret that these private hitmen will make things much worse for Matthew.

And the only random for this kidnapping will be the agents' surrender. Considering Madeline is allowing inmates to escape under the pretext of transferring them, there are no limits she wouldn't sink to just to get the mercenary to help her. Even if it means doing the worst to Matthew, just to get the agents to give up.

'Blindspot' season 5 airs on Fridays at 9 PM only on NBC.
