'Black-ish' Season 7 Episode 7: How does Diane teach her parents a lesson? Fans say she's 'growing up'
Remember when Jack (Miles Brown) and Diane (Marsai Martin) were still young enough to be dressed up in little costumes and taken trick or treating on Halloween? As their parents Dre (Anthony Anderson) and Bow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) still continue to forget the twin-tweens aren't their youngest and baby DeVante still continues to be missing on the show, Diane takes time out to point out her parent's glaring gender biases when it comes to children and how!
It starts with the snarky teen getting herself a social media account to point out pretty much every inequality that she and countless others face as women, compared to their male counterparts. And in her process of teaching her parents a lesson, it propels them to give out equal punishments so fans believe somewhere Diane is growing up.
The seventh episode of Season 7, titled 'Babes in Boyland' is a hilarious spin on the title. It really is hard being a babe in a man's world and Diane seems to have a better grasp of it than anybody else. The official synopsis details that in this episode, "Dre and Bow find out that Diane has a secret social media account; Junior and Ruby confess to their romantic partners about little lies they've told since their relationships began."
Starting with the social media account that both she and her twin brother Jack have by now Diane, without asserting snark in her tone, points out the many glaring discrepancies in Bow and Dre's parenting. From men's easy procreation abilities in general to her own brother posing shirtless and getting women to make out with him, while Diane here gets in trouble for just posing in a hoodie - the biases are endless. Of course, after hearing her out, Dre and Bow decide to dole out equal punishment to their twins just to fix the gender disbalance in their household and Diane sits quietly and takes the grounding just like her brother Jack. But the patience she shows at proving her point really touches fans.
"This is a mix of old episodes about gender roles and Diane getting older," tweeted a fan about the episode. Another noted: "#Blackish Wow. The twins are growing up. Jack realizing he has privilege as a boy. Diane speaking up for herself! Junior is navigating relationships. I remember when they all still had their baby teeth!" A third fan also touted the outcome Diane was able to get for herself in the family, writing: "Wow well at Dre & Bow got right. Treat Diane & Jack the same and no double standard" and her poised way of going about accepting punishment also hit a mark. "Diane just sat there & took Dre's ranting! No witty snap back. She's growing up," remarked a fan. No wonder fans are cheering for the little tween, noting: "That’s right Diane!! Stand your ground sis!!!"
