'Blackish' Season 7 Episode 2: Stress gets to Dre as he smashes a box of cookies, fans say he is 'all of us'
Let's be honest, we have all been there. It has been more than half a year since the coronavirus pandemic broke out and as we approach the end of the year, most of us may have already accepted that this is not going away anytime soon, but we are also filled with a sense of resignation that we will have to spend the holidays like never before. With the return of 'Blackish' for its seventh season, seeing our current situations being played out feels cathartic, and there was nothing more so than seeing Andre "Dre" Johnson Sr (Anthony Anderson) smash a box of cookies.
It all started with homeschooling. With his wife, Dr Rainbow "Bow" Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) already doing the most by saving lives — as Bow says, you wouldn't make Mariah Carey do the dishes — Dre is in complete charge of the Johnson household and that includes handling the twins' homeschooling prep. With Jack (Miles Brown) and Diane (Marsai Martin) at home all the time, Dre thinks he is killing it with his big board of activities. But it turns out that the children are having a hard time coping as well. Dre adjusts his own lifestyle for his children — as many parents have done during this pandemic — but taking care of everything took its toll on Dre, who is trying to do his best in all aspects of his life.
Eventually, that stress gets to him and it does not take much for him to break down. When the wrong box of cookies gets delivered — he wanted Oreos, he got cookies but a different brand — he breaks down and smashes the box of cookies, crying and wishing he could have gone back to 2019 when he could just taste free samples in the supermarket. Yeah, we have all been there and fans agree. 'Blackish' has always been relatable, but it is doing an even more excellent job this pandemic.
One fan tweeted, "Dre is all of us having breakdown over a box cookies in this pandemic, he either tired of ratio food or he need some milk #blackish." Another fan wrote, "#blackish, this episode is US All!! Life is so uncertain right now."

A viewer opined, "#blackish is nailing the Covid-19 malaise zeitgeist with incisive humor. Collective misery needs humor about our collective miserable situations. Thanks Blackish for making reality suck just a little less for 30 minutes this evening!" Another wrote, "I feel exactly how Dre feels. This was me writing a thesis during a pandemic (no kids though). I still struggle to give myself grace and manage my anxiety. #blackish@blackishabc @BlackishWriters #NowWatching." A fan tweeted, "This episode gave me the giggles I needed. Seeing Dre smash those wannabe Oreos had me cackling! #blackish."
