The news of notorious New York City scammers Billy McFarland and Martin Shkreli being released from prison early broke on the same day. McFarland was released from prison secretly on March 30 and sent to community confinement. He has served less than four years of a six-year sentence in connection with his 2017 Caribbean retreat. Shkreli, on the other hand, was released almost two years early on Wednesday, May 18. He served only five of a seven-year sentence behind bars. The two were set for release in 2023. Both Shkreli and McFarland will be held in halfway houses until October and August, respectively.

McFarland pleaded guilty to counts of wire fraud in March 2018, after he scammed as many as 80 investors into putting money in the fake "luxury" Fyre Festival. The apparent festival turned out to be one that had no food, toilets, music, or basic accommodations.

Former pharmaceutical executive and 'Pharma Bro' Shkreli was charged in 2017 and convicted in federal court on two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiring to commit securities fraud. Shkreli was accused of defrauding investors in two hedge funds he ran and scheming to defraud investors in drugmaker Retrophin Inc, where was chief executive. He was also facing a separate antitrust lawsuit for raising the price of the rare anti-parasitic drug Daraprim by 5,000 per cent. Just hours ago, Shkreli posted a selfie on Facebook with the caption, "Getting out of real prison is easier than getting out of Twitter prison."
