Big Wan was residing at the residence with his mother and grandmother, according to a longtime family acquaintance Hilda Alayeto. Big Wan died tragically just months after Pitchfork featured him in a March story of Milwaukee's burgeoning street rap scene.
Big Wan was recognized in the newspaper as "the city's best s**t-talker." "He's responsible for some of the most entertaining rap in a city where there's no shortage of it right now." He began producing music as a youngster with the support of his mentor, local rapper Wonderbread Rie, and rapidly gained a reputation for being easygoing, cheerful and nice.
His manager Will Norton, better known as Bagzz, said of him, "He was just so modest. He just caught up on everything and never contradicted anyone. He was attentive and only concerned about making it." Turner was remembered by family members as a charming sweetie. "He wanted to make people laugh and smile," said Hilda Alayeto, his mother's best friend for 30 years. Turner had known Alayeto his whole life, and Alayeto had even organized his baby shower. "Dawan was a lovely character. He's the child that always gives you a hug and checks to see if you're okay". She described him as being "almost like a giant teddy bear."
Big Wan's breakout tune was the single 'Fast Lane Lifestyle' which was released in November 2019. His low-key swagger and unusual style lured listeners into his smart wordplay — engagingly droll, with a slurred word occasionally playfully breaking his keen flow. TeeGlazedIt, a prominent Milwaukee music video filmmaker, directed the song's music video, which has been seen over 400,000 times on YouTube.
The song was featured on Big Wan's debut mixtape 'Dog Slayers', which was released in 2019, followed by the 10-track 'Dog Slayers 2' last year. 'Dog Slayers 3' will be launched on January 24, as scheduled, on Turner's 20th birthday. Other boastful, one-off songs released by Big Wan in the last two years, include '8ight Blocks' (434,000 YouTube views), 'Eggshell' (268,000 views), and 'Kill', all of which were backed with popular TeeGlazedIt-directed videos (115,000 views).
