Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently tweeted that the US ‘firmly opposes’ the International Criminal Court’s investigation into alleged war crimes in the Palestinian territories, which he referred to as the ‘Palestinian Situation' and in no time people slammed him for his ill phrased tweet from Wednesday, March 3.

"The United States firmly opposes an @IntlCrimCourt investigation into the Palestinian Situation. We will continue to uphold our strong commitment to Israel and its security, including by opposing actions that seek to target Israel unfairly," Blinken tweeted.

Blinken's tweet came after the international criminal court launched an investigation into alleged war crimes in the Palestinian territories, including the period covered by the 2014 Gaza war, potentially placing hundreds of Israelis, including soldiers and senior political figures, at risk of prosecution. The Palestinian foreign ministry welcomed the decision as an opportunity for justice and accountability and called for a swift investigation.

ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda on Wednesday, March 3, announced her intention to open an investigation saying: "Our central concern must be for the victims of crimes, both Palestinian and Israeli, arising from the long cycle of violence and insecurity that has caused deep suffering and despair on all sides. The Office is aware of the wider concern, respecting this Situation, for international peace and security.

Through the creation of the ICC, States Parties recognised that atrocity crimes are "a threat to peace, security and wellbeing of the world", and resolved "to guarantee lasting respect for and the enforcement of international justice." The pursuit of peace and justice should be seen as mutually reinforcing imperatives."

But Blinken's tweet calling it a "situation" sparked fury online. One Internet user tweeted: "The #Palestinian situation? What a distasteful way of reducing the devastation of occupation, apartheid & war crimes. People usually avoid *investigations* when they’re worried about what they’ll find." While another one said: "Ahh yes the Palestinian situation. the Palestinian kerfuffle. a wee Palestinian dustup. a Palestinian fracas. the Palestinian faux pas”" Another said, "The Palestinian Situation. Apartheid. You mean Apartheid."

Rep Justin Amash said: ".@SecBlinken, why not just say the US government opposes the International Criminal Court? That’s a reasonable position that a lot of people share, including me. Framing your concern as opposition to an “investigation into the Palestinian Situation” is demeaning and disgusting."

While another one slammed Blinken saying. "This is expected! Colonists defend one another, in the end, Palestinians and Indigenous people of 'America' share the same occupation experience! Justice is beyond your 'tinder' warnings..."

Political analyst Omar Baddar said, "This is disgraceful! Blinken recently insisted US foreign policy will center human rights, but here he is opposing accountability for Israel's war crimes against Palestinians, which he absurdly calls 'the Palestinian situation.' Shame on you @SecBlinken!" Another one tweeted: "Let’s distill that. You oppose an investigation into human rights abuses."
