BUCKHEAD, ATLANTA: A career criminal who was arrested for fatally stabbing a grandmother while stealing her car had been "chased out of a liquor" store just minutes before the killing after "trying to rob them while brandishing a knife." Following the chase at the liquor store, Brown, 23, is believed to have "hopped over" a fence of the gated community before committing the senseless murder. Slain Bowles's son Michael Bowles, 30, discovered her body as he arrived home for the holidays. Brown was arrested on suspicion of murder, aggravated battery, hijacking a motor vehicle in the first degree, possession of a knife, and abuse of a disabled or elderly person.

23-year-old Brown has a history of several prior convictions. During one incident at a liquor store, the shopworker said Brown was known for being homeless in the area and "always under the influence," reported Daily Mail. He tried to buy a $20 bottle of Absolut Vodka, but when he was denied his purchase because he was "already intoxicated," he then "grabbed the bottle and walked out." Store employees tried to stop Brown, but he "snatched" the bottle and "was aggressive," stated a court document. He was charged with shoplifting, a felony, but was released on a pre-trial release signature bone in 2019 March.
Brown was convicted for charges relating to drugs and a concealed weapon in January 2020, including a simple family assault in August of the same year. Moreover, it is not clear how Brown may have entered the gated community. Police believe Brown was working with an accomplice but so far only Brown has been arrested. Deputy police Chief Charles Hampton Jr said it was believed that Brown got into Bowles' neighborhood by foot, but did not say how he made it past the gate. "We have who we were looking for right now," Hampton said in his announcement of Brown's arrest. Bowles's car was later discovered dumped in DeKalb county after being driven throughout the city on Saturday.
