SAHUAYO, MEXICO: Andrea Granados was electrocuted on stage while vying for the title of Miss Sahuayo 2022 in the western Mexican state of Michoacán, on Sunday, November 27.

The 22-year-old approached the microphone platform barefoot wearing a traditional dress, decorated with a variety of colorful feathers. As she touched the microphone to begin her address to the crowd, she jumped back as though jolted and fell down, the microphone still in her hand. She tried to get the microphone away as the master of ceremonies was heard yelling, “She's being electrocuted, she's being electrocuted.” While she could not win the beauty pageant title at the contest, she was given the unofficial ‘Miss Sympathy’ award for the accident.

Before several pageant staffers helped her, Granados was lying on her back and had managed to yank the microphone cable out of the plug, cutting off power. Despite burning her palm she returned to the runway to finish her routine. While medical personnel surrounded her to make sure she was okay, the pageant briefly stopped. According to the local news outlet Mexico Detail Zero, Granados only suffered burns to the hand in which she held the microphone and was otherwise unharmed. “We were live when she received a strong shock,” one pageant competitor told the outlet. “Miss Andrea just received a strong electric shock from the microphone. They are already taking care of her," the competitior added.

According to New York Post, social media watchdogs blasted the event organizers before the unexpected accident for the lack of safety and inadequate planning. Granados responded amicably to the pageant's mishap and made jokes about it. “I came back recharged — literally, hahaha,” she quipped upon her return to a standing ovation. “Thank God, everything is fine,” the young model added as the crowd cheered her on. “I want to share with you that after undergoing some medical tests, I can say that I feel fine. Thank God, it did not go beyond a burn.”
