CNN broadcast reporter Anderson Cooper joined Stephen Colbert on 'The Late Show' on the May 4 episode. Cooper is a new father, his son Wyatt Morgan Cooper was born last Monday, April 27 via a surrogate and he had announced the good news on April 30 on-air. His voice choked mid-sentence as he expressed his happiness over the arrival of his son while he gushed, "He was 7.2 lbs at birth, and he is sweet, and soft, and healthy and I am beyond happy."

Speaking of Wyatt on the show, he told Colbert, that he never thought he would be able to pull it off. "This is astonishing.  I always dreamed of it but never thought I would be able to do it and it's just been incredible," he added.

Elaborating the first time holding his son, Cooper added, "It's like tectonic plates that are shifting, except it doesn't leave you in the rubble."

Colbert asked Cooper if he's taking parenting advice from his best pal Andy Cohen who welcomed his son Benjamin last year.

Cooper mentioned that his friend has been of great help and talking to him brought in the realization that "if he (Andy) could do it" and that was the "final push" for him to go ahead with his baby plans.

Cooper further told Colbert that his son is "entirely wearing" hand-me-downs from Cohen's son. "I am inherently cheap, I love a good value." He further added that there are not too many options to shop in the pandemic so Cohen gave him all the clothes. He jokingly added that "I wanted my son to be a Depression Era child who grows up wearing hand-me-down clothes."

Cooper also revealed that he's doing okay with getting away with less sleep as he's "just discovered coffee"

"I can't believe I have gone so long without coffee. I like soda, I don't like hot things. I tried once or twice on TV and I didn't see the point. Now, I totally get it. I am addicted and it just snaps your mind into focus. I wake up, I think of my son first but caffeine is a close second," he added.

Cooper lost his mother Gloria Vanderbilt in June last year and he told Colbert that he was with her while she breathed her last. He added that he thought about his mom a lot when he saw Wyatt being born. "To see a new human being come into existence is something I have never seen before. Seeing the life leave her body (Gloria) and seeing life come of this wonderful woman(surrogate) is extraordinary"

Later in the episode, Cooper also mentioned that while he's not reporting and taking a break from diaper duty, he catches up on 'Narcos', 'Better Call Saul', and 'Breaking Bad'. "Pablo Escobar just calms me down for some reason" concluded Cooper.
