UVALDE, TEXAS: Ana Rodriguez, the mother of Uvalde shooting victim, Maite Rodriguez, was shoved by a Texas Department of Public Safety officer as she attempted to remove her son from Flores Elementary school during a national gun violence walkout. A video of the altercation was filmed and shared on social media by a witness named Brett Cross. The complete footage of the encounter was later shared by the Texas Department of Public Safety with the aim of providing “additional context and transparency” and to “mend divisions between police and the community.”

The incident comes less than a year after the Robb Elementary School shooting incident where 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos fatally shot 19 children and two adult teachers and left 17 others injured. Students and their families from the Uvalde Independent Consolidated School District staged the walkout on Wednesday, April 5, to protest against gun violence in the US. The walkout came after another huge protest was organized in Nashville following in the wake of the Covenant School shooting which took the lives of three children and three faculty members, as reported by ABC News.

Who is Ana Rodriguez?

Ana is the mother of 10-year-old Uvalde school shooting victim Maite, who was among the 21 individuals killed during the incident. Nearly a year after the tragedy, the former made news after having an altercation with a Texas Department of Public Safety officer while trying to remove her son from school during a gun violence protest.

The woman was reportedly left bruised after being shoved by the cop. A video of the altercation showed Ana banging on the door of Flores Elementary School while attempting to remove her son from the scene of the protest. At one point, she was stopped by a trooper, who later grabbed her arm, turned her around, lifted her from under the arms and shoved her out of the venue. However, Ana continued to struggle and yelled at the officer to allow her to escort her son from the school.

The DPS trooper reportedly said that he warned Rodriguez would be arrested if she continued to struggle and told her he would allow her inside the school if she enters quietly, the Daily Mail reported. The latter then said they already attempted to enter the premises quietly. The officer eventually allowed Rodriguez to remove her son from the venue, the publication noted.

'Unnecessary and wrong'

The internet immediately reacted to the incident and expressed their empathy towards Rodriguez. “It’s INFURIATING and NOT OKAY. It’s just reminding me May 24th when they didn’t let the parents pick up their child to save them!!!! KEEP FIGHTING we stand with you guys,” wrote one Twitter user. “Breaks my heart. Unnecessary and wrong,” added another. “This is horrible - glad y’all have documented what happened. Take more pics tomorrow because probably change in color and get darker. DPS shouldn’t be putting hands on anyone especially parents,” a third user commented.
