According to reports, the film is based on the young-adult novel of the same name by Genzaburo Yoshino which tells the story of a 15-year-old boy as he embarks on a journey of spiritual growth, poverty, and the meaning of life. He is not alone in the journey and has a journal with him that contains some really invaluable advice from his uncle.
The Academy Award-winning filmmaker has called it his favorite childhood book and is narrated in two voices. According to the English translation, “The first belongs to Copper, fifteen, who after the death of his father must confront inevitable and enormous change, including his own betrayal of his best friend. In between episodes of Copper’s emerging story, his uncle writes to him in a journal, sharing knowledge and offering advice on life’s big questions as Copper begins to encounter them. Over the course of the story, Copper, like his namesake Copernicus, looks to the stars, and uses his discoveries about the heavens, earth, and human nature to answer the question of how he will live.”
Miyazaki has been one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and has done some of the most ground-breaking work in animation. He has won several awards over his career and received universal acclaim for all of his movies. In 2001, ‘Spirited Away’ became his magnum opus and is often considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. The movie went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards. BBC voted ‘Spirited Away’ as the fourth-best film of the 21st century.
Meanwhile, his 2013 film ‘The Wind Rises’, also received universal acclaim and was nominated for an Academy Award as well.
Miyazaki has frequently been cited as an inspiration for numerous animators, directors, and writers. It will be interesting to see Miyazaki in his element once again and it might be the last time we’ll be seeing a feature film from such an iconic director.
