Is Chris Kattan OK? Ex-'SNL' actor hospitalized and undergoes surgery due to 'frightening health issue'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Chris Kattan reportedly underwent emergency surgery due to a "frightening health issue" recently. According to sources close to Kattan, he had a serious case of pneumonia caused by the bacteria streptococcus pneumoniae and was taken to the hospital. He then required immediate surgery and thankfully, the procedure was successful. If everything goes according to plan, the former SNL star will reportedly be discharged from the hospital on Friday, December 9, and should be able to start working again soon.
According to the Mayo Clinic, pneumonia can be caused by numerous bacteria. It is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. The air sacs may fill with fluid or pus (purulent material), causing cough with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. A variety of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, can cause pneumonia. The severity of pneumonia can range from minor to life-threatening. The most vulnerable groups include newborns and young children, adults over 65, and those with health conditions or weaker immune systems. For some older adults and people with heart failure or chronic lung problems, pneumonia can quickly become a life-threatening condition.

Kattan had to miss some upcoming dates in his comedy tour due to his illness. Unfortunately, as per TMZ, he will have to reschedule several of his upcoming tour dates as well as a show that was scheduled for this Friday, December 9, in Valparaiso, Indiana. The actor had an eight-year run on ‘SNL’ where he appeared in numerous legendary skits, playing Mango or boppin' his head with Will Ferrell during ‘A Night at the Roxbury.’ Earlier, he took some time away from the spotlight as he returned to doing standups.
In 2019, Kattan had opened up about another serious, life-changing injury that he said he sustained on a variety show almost 18 years ago. In his memoir, ‘Baby Don’t Hurt Me: Stories and Scars from Saturday Night Live’, the comedian revealed a sketch that aired on May 12, 2001, which required him to fall back in a chair, according to Variety. Kattan reportedly claimed that he requested a replacement chair from the props department after raising concerns about the chair's safety, but he claimed he never received one.
Eventually, the sketch started, and he reportedly sustained a terrible head injury to the point of being close to paralyzed, slumped back on the chair, and landed forcefully on the stage. After months of putting up with the escalating discomfort of his injury, Kattan eventually saw a doctor. “NBC had stopped paying my medical costs after the second surgery. I had been brought up to be responsible for myself. I wasn’t about to sue anybody. I never wanted to be that person: spending my life debilitated and fighting a network. I wanted to hide everything, pretending I was okay and in good enough shape to go out in public and be social,” Kattan wrote in the memoir.
