'American Idol': Fans say Douglas Mills Jr's performance 'deserved' a platinum ticket

Douglas Mills Jr. left the judges on ‘American Idol’ season 20 completely awestruck and the social media users speechless after he sang his rendition of ‘Strange Fruit’ by Billie Holiday. The 18-year-old from Houston, who before the audition revealed about how he got bullied in school, quickly got a standing ovation as soon as he wrapped up his wonderful set. He even ended up getting a group hug in the end by Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
 
Douglas had earlier earned the VIP Affiliate Silver Pass from ABC that left the trio thoroughly impressed. Speaking about his audition, Lionel Richie said that he blanked out, passed out, and woke up again. Katy, who held her tears back, dubbed the skilled teen singer as superstar adding that his set was iconic and that he completely froze the room. Luke pitched in at the end saying he felt as if Douglas took their bodies and hypnotized them and took them on a journey. The judges then handed him the coveted golden ticket that left a few social media users irked as they thought he should have got the platinum ticket. For the unversed, with four episodes down, only singers namely HunterGirl and Kenedi Anderson have bagged the rare platinum ticket so far.

The fans of ‘American Idol’ flocked to Twitter to shower their praises on Douglas. “This damn Douglas Mills Jr. Clearly the best so far this season. The voice and the emotion is ridiculous. That wasn't an audition but a performance”, said one stunned user as another chimed in, “Congratulations Douglas! You deserve it! Don't ever let the haters and bullies stop you! I look forward to seeing more of you on #AmericanIdol!! Sending hugs and love to you and your Mom! Believe in yourself!” One user posted, “I didn't know what just hit me. Wow. Douglas' pure talent put me in tears. He was singing to my soul. He's an inspiration and I'm looking forward to more heartfelt performances from him.”
 
The next one shared, “That was a moving performance! I was completely entranced. Go ahead, Douglas!!!” Another stated, “What did I just watch?! Omg! This young man left me speechless! He left me in tears! Douglas you're going a long way!” One added, “Douglas Mills had me frozen over here in Canada, too. What a gem.” And, another said, “Beautiful. Eloquent. Perfect . Flawless . I think it is criminal he didn’t get a platinum ticket . That is a voice and performance to cherish . Give him a platinum ticket.” Echoing similar sentiments, one user concluded, “This kid SHOULD GET THE PLATUIM TICKET.”
