If Yoli Mayor from the recently aired episode of 'American Idol' Season 20 looks familiar, then you may recognie this talented Cuban-American singer from 'America's Got Talent'. After getting booted from the NBC during the semi-finals, Yoli is all set to make a comeback on our small screens as a contestant on 'American Idol'.
Yoli's journey on the ABC show was already off to a rough start when judge Katy Perry was left unimpressed with her performance and said no to her. Luckily for her, the other judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were impressed by her original song 'Beautiful, Broken Things' and decided to take a gamble on her, and handed out the golden ticket to Hollywood. While the fans are pleased about the 26-year-old earning a spot on the singing competition show, they were however mad at Katy for saying no to her and declared that the 'Roar' singer was jealous. Who is Yoli Mayor?
Yoli is a proud first-generation Cuban-American, who joined the ABC show to represent Miami and Cuban culture. In her introduction segment, she paid a heart-warming tribute to her grandmother, who escaped from Cuba to America with nothing but just the clothes on her back. After moving to America, her grandma started from scratch and built her own business while raising her four sons. Yoli dubbed her grandmother as her ultimate inspiration and believed that earning the golden ticket would make her family proud.
Yoli has been singing since the age of two, and revealed that she always wanted to be a singer. She competed on her first talent show at the age of 10. She became popular after her stint on 'AGT' in 2017, when she was 21. She revealed in an interview with The Miami New Times that she was bullied due to her weight in high school. Yoli was keen on promoting body positivity.
The 26-year-old released four songs to date under her Live at the Sugar Shack EP in June 2020. The EP included her take on Camile Cabello's 'Havana' and her original song 'Fire'.
Yoli Mayor on 'American Idol' Season 20
For her 'American Idol' audition, Yoli decided to sing her original song 'Beautiful, Broken Things'. By the end of her performance, the judges had some interesting feedback for her. While Luke complimented Yoli's command and how people will pay attention to her voice, Lionel found her very entertaining and seemed pleased with her performance. But Katy didn't share the same thoughts as her fellow judges. While she enjoyed the texture of Yoli's voice, she felt that the young singer should have played more with dynamics, so said no to her.
Luke and Lionel decided to take a gamble on Yoli and said yes to her. Several fans were unimpressed with the judges' hesitation to give Yoli the golden ticket and were convinced that Katy was jealous. A fan commented on the show's YouTube clip with, "Wait! What did Katy Perry say? She didn't feel it? That was one of the best performances on American Idol this season. Sorry Miss Perrry, not all superstars have blonde hair." "Wow, what a voice! I cannot believe Katy found anything to criticize. Yoli has talent and presence. She will do well in the competition," wrote a fan. "Katyyyyyyy....what happened? You, of all people, did not feel it? Come on, you can do better than this! She was spectacular! A creative young woman with a great voice easily recognizable and gorgeous! What more did you need? Creativity is not always "soft"," added a fan.
Another fan shared, "Look at the expression on Katy’s face when she was singing. I’ve seen it before. It’s envy." "Idk it could just be me but I was getting jealous vibes from Katy. The moment the girl said she was from Cuba, I saw a change in Katys face. And when she started singing, Katy knew she sang well. I've seen this with other contestants...like Katy gets offended or something. It's also possible that Katy knows she was on AGT and knows that this girl can probably surpass a lot of contestants. Idk..it was odd that Katy was so against her so quickly without any significant positive feedback," pointed out a fan.
