'American Idol': Margie Mays returns to impress while boyfriend Jonny West is more than just a vocal supporter
The new season of the singing competition 'American Idol' is here, with Episode 2 premiering on Sunday night, February 23.
Thousands of hopefuls flocked in this time for the audition round, hoping to impress the judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. One couple, in particular, is sure to make deep inroads in the competition based on their vocal performances.
First up, was returning 'Idol' candidate, 26-year-old music teacher Margie Mays. The quirky blonde from last year's singing tryouts won a lot of fans for herself even though her singing wasn't really up to par.
Although she was eliminated in Hawaii, Margie decided to take the time away from the singing competition to work hard on her vocal process and came ready to show that she had improved significantly.
Accompanied by her supportive boyfriend on piano, Jonny West, Margie sang Adele's 'I Found A Boy' and sang her socks off for her audition.
The judges were pretty impressed once she was done, noting that she had definitely improved since last year. Luke Bryan said that she didn't really hit bad notes this time around while Lionel Richie said that he really liked her as a person.
Katy Perry wasn't a fan of her song choice, so decided to say no. However, since both male judges really liked her performance, Margie was given a golden ticket to showcase what she could do in the Hollywood round.
Next up was her boyfriend, 23-year-old piano teacher Jonny West from California. Although he had accompanied Margie to last year's auditions, Jonny had just been there to give her moral support and be an emotional rock to lean on or her "purse holder," as he so eloquently put it.
However this time, Jonny decided to step into the spotlight with Margie and see how far his talent would take him.
Electing to sing an original song, Jonny immediately conjured up visions of last year's runner up, Alejandro, with his singing prowess and proficiency on the piano. However, what really made his good performance great was the fact that he unexpectedly rapped up a storm.
The judges were pleasantly surprised to hear Jonny's sick flows dribble off his tongue with such practiced ease and unanimously ushered him through to Hollywood on the basis of that amazing performance with three big yeses.
Katy Perry called him the silent but deadly killer while Luke Bryan noted that the audition had brought him really close to the Alejandro lane.
The judges also cautioned him, saying that there was a possibility that he might go further than Margie in the competition and that he had to be prepared for his life to drastically change. They were also really pleased that soon he would be known as Jonny West the singer and not just Margie Mays' boyfriend.
And social media was taking note of that as well! One user said, "This Jonny West kid on #AmericanIdol just smoked his audition," while another new fan exclaimed, "Okay I never watch @AmericanIdol like ever lol but Jonny West might be my new favorite singer.... #AmericanIdol."
Other fans of the couple wanted to see them perform together more, saying, "Okay @margiemaysmusic you and Jonny need to make a duet song together for real." We do hope both of them go far in this competition.
