Katy Perry backs Michael Williams after he fails to reach Top 12, says viewers are 'jealous' of him
BRENTWOOD, CALIFORNIA: Michael Williams, a Mason native, began his optimistic quest to success on 'American Idol' on April 24. But his performance became a topic of debate after judge Katy Perry revealed the reason why Michael may not get the vote from the listeners.
The Top 20 will perform again on Night 2 of 'American Idol' this week. But not for the sake of votes! Ryan Seacrest will bring up the Top 12 singers one by one, and after being deemed safe, the contender will perform a "victory" song. The remaining 10 contestants will next compete for one of the judges' two wildcard places. Despite his apparent confidence following his performance, Michael did not seem to have the shortcut to Top 12!

Katy thinks people are jealous of Michael
For the live audience, Michael performed 'Golden Hour' by JVKE. Not that these performances matter much, the judges most likely plan ahead of time whom they will save if necessary. Michael's beautiful tone is complemented by the music selection. His falsetto, on the other hand, is pitchy. Katy claims the viewers "didn’t vote for you because they’re jealous of you".
Michael stunned the judges on 'American Idol' Sunday night with his new style. The Mason native and former Kings Island performer sported a shorter hairdo and sang 'Lose You To Love Me' by Selena Gomez. Michael is one of 20 competitors competing for the top slot in the competitive singing series. Katy, who said Michael's performance gave her "chill bumps" last week, reacted to his new appearance. "Change is hard sometimes, but change is necessary because you know what you just stepped into is the artist version of who you are," she explained. "Sometimes you've got to cut your hair to do that. I would know."
'It was NOT your golden hour'
Fans didn't hold back from still bashing the contestant as they tweet, "Michael Williams lost everything that was good about him. Before he was really cute, sweet, Tom Cruise-ish looking. Now he’s slick, looks like everyone else, hair cut like he’s mark consuelo, is winking at the camera. He’s lost me." One took a jab at judge Katy as they write, "'katy better not pick [michael] 'cause he's cute' -my mom." Another person chimed in, "the studio audience just finds michael hot and you can tell from all the screaming (or maybe they just like the song 'cause it's pretty new idk)." One criticized his tone saying, "Y’all Michael is pitchy every time. I don’t understand."

On Reddit, viewers shared similar views as they write, "Michael can go." Another added, "love that song but it wasn’t a good choice for michael. it was NOT your golden hour." One comment also read, "The judges need to help meet the diversity quota so there’s no way Michael, a white male, gets a save lmao." Another redditor sighed, "Michael my man this just isn’t good like at all."
'American Idol' Season 21 airs every Sunday and Monday at 8 pm ET on ABC.
