'We could have cut this': Fans slam 'American Idol' for 3-hour run time as they blame commercials and sob stories
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: 'American Idol' Season 21 hopefuls returned to Hollywood after rocking performances at Aulani Disney Resort & Spa in Hawaii. However, six aspiring singers got eliminated from the Top 26 and the remaining 20 contestants compete for the Top 12 spot.
However, the hopefuls and the judges -- Katy Perry, Lionel Riche, and Luke Bryan -- move to a brand new set for the special three-hour. 'American Idol' alums Noah Thompson and HunterGirl took the stage and delivered electrifying guest performances. Legendary singer Smokey Robinson was also roped in as the guest performer in the latest episode. As the ABC show's host Ryan Seacrest previously revealed that the episode would be longer because of the guest performances, the viewers felt it was not necessary.

'American Idol' special three-hour run
Seacrest had announced major changes to 'American Idol' Season 21 ahead of the Top 20 reveal. He teased the new set and noted that the new episode will air for three hours. During the 'American Idol' special three-hour run, Season 20 winner Noah and runner-up HunterGirl performed. Additionally, Motown legend Smokey Robinson also took the stage and delivered a special performance for the viewers.
During the episode, the judges revealed the Top 20 contestants who advanced to the next round. Then the Top 20 hopefuls delivered stirring performances to grab the spot in the Top 12. Furthermore, viewers were also treated to the back stories of their favorite contestants and a few advertisements.
'Why is 'American Idol' 3 hours tonight?'
'American Idol' viewers enjoyed the performances by guest singers and the contestants. However, some fans felt that there was no need for a three-hour run. A social media user questioned while adding a sobbing emoticon, "Why is 'American Idol' 3 hours tonight?" Another viewer added, "Three hours…that means a s**t ton of commercials !! 😖🤬😤#AmericanIdol."
One Twitter user noted, "All these commercials. No wonder it’s 3 hours long! #AmericanIdol." Another fan suggested, "We could have cut this @AmericanIdol episode from 3 hours to 1 hour if we didn’t have to focus so much on backstory. Just show me their talent and let me vote. #AmericanIdol."
Another viewer tweeted, "Cut out all the bulls**t out & this could have been done in a hour. 3 hours is 100% unnecessary." Meanwhile, one Reddit user said, "At first, they let 2 sing between commercials. Now it’s after just one singer. That’s why it’s 3 hours 🙄." "30 minutes of music and 2 1/2 hours of sob stories 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽," commented another viewer.
