'American Horror Story 1984': Sarah Paulson has a surprise cameo and we're hoping she's the big bad

In a recent interview, Paulson teased that she might 'pop up' in the upcoming ninth season which bears eerie similarities to season 2, 'Asylum'.

While fans were still getting used to the idea of a Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters less 'American Horror Story' season, Paulson has now given them something to cling on to. In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Paulson teased that she might 'pop up' in the upcoming ninth season, titled 'American Horror story: 1984', and that has got us wondering whether she could be the big bad villain this time!

A veteran on the show for the last eight seasons, Paulson's most remarkable performance was in the form of journalist Lana Winters in the second season of the show, called 'Asylum'. What's more striking is that the ninth season, aka '1984' has some eerie resemblances and possible connections to the past, circa the setting of 'Asylum'.

The main element of horror in season 9, '1984' happens to be an escaped murderer from a psychiatric ward. The murderer, dubbed as Mr. Jingles, is an ax-wielding psychopath who targets a group of young kids at a lakeside camp, in a very 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and 'Cabin in the Woods' style. He wears a mask and while he might bring back memories of Leatherface from the chainsaw massacre horror, or even Michael Myers from the 'Halloween' franchise, Mr. Jingles also bears certain resemblances to the 'Asylum' murderer, Bloodyface.

In 'Asylum', we saw Bloodyface as the serial killing psychopath Dr. Oliver Thredson, played by Zachary Quinto. Oliver worked at the titular asylum where Paulson's character Lana was held against her will for conversion therapy after she was outed as a lesbian back in the 60s setting of the season. Oliver showed her a route to escape but it was all a ruse to kidnap her and impregnate her with his child, for some sick twisted needs of his. But even though Lana managed to escape Oliver's confinement, she did end up getting pregnant, gave up the child for adoption, thus giving rise to Bloodyface 2.0 with severe abandonment and mommy issues.

Now, the reason why we think Mr. Jingles could be the same old Lana Winters, aka Paulson 'popping by' this season, is because 'Asylum' had ended with Lana shooting her son, aka Bloodyface 2.0 in a final face-off. Our theory is that Lana was taken captive at the time, following the murder of her son, and admitted back to a psychiatric facility and 20 years later, in '1984', she has broken out of the ward to resume her son's unfinished business, because well, that's how the twisted ways of Ryan Murphy's storytelling works.

All of this is just speculation though, but it's not that difficult to connect the dots. As of now, we are just thrilled that the possibility of seeing Paulson still lingers in the upcoming season nine, arriving this September 18, at 9 p.m. only on FX.
