'Outer Range' Episode 5 Review: Royal looks harder for answers, Joy closes in on Perry
Spoilers for 'Outer Range' Episode 5
'Outer Range' started as a slow-burner of sorts. That no longer seem to be the case as the science-fiction series heads towards the finish line. Episode 5 is a testament to that fact, as loose ends begin to get tied. Titled 'The Soil', Episode 5 of 'Outer Range' begins with Wayne Tillerson cheerfully making his way back home after knocking Royal out by striking him with the geode rock. As Wayne maintains contact with the rock, glimpses of his childhood are shown where it's revealed that he had witnessed a soot-covered boy coming out of the void.
The glimpses are cut short as Wayne reaches his ranch and he calls out for his family members to share something with him but collapses after having a stroke. The following day Royal is seen at a geologist's office, getting Autumn's necklace examined, after winning it from her in the previous episode of 'Outer Range.' However, he cuts the geologist short from taking the ornament for examination after finding out that she could be involved with an organization that he saw when he was inside the void. He does try to make contact with them to know more about what they do but isn't able to get past their automated services.

Autumn, in the meantime, breaks into Royal's house looking for the necklace but is held at gunpoint by Cecilia and asked to leave immediately but not before she says something rather unsettling for the latter as it affects her behavior for the rest of the episode. Deputy Sheriff Joy questions people who were at the bar the night Trevor went missing and begins to zero in on Perry Abbott after a reliable source confirms that he was the one beating up Trevor.
Episode 5 of 'Outer Range' ends with Royal breaking the amber that holds the rock in Autumn's necklace and making direct contact with it, while Perry is shown spending time with Autumn, who seems to hint at knowing more about his wife's disappearance.
'The Soil' certainly brings more to the table than previous episodes as questions are beginning to be answered. The episode, directed by Amy Seimetz and written by Dominic Orlando and Naledi Jackson, is spaced out in a manner that gives all characters ample screen time while ensuring that it isn't a long or a taxing watch. Imogen Poots truly shines as Autumn Rivers, as she begins to make moves that will help her get what she wants while Lewis Pullman and Lili Taylor excel at being reluctant participants involved in a cover-up.
