In the second season of 'All Rise' on CBS, airing now, there were two major plot points revealed. One was that Luke Watkins (J Alex Brinson) — who is now working at the District Attorney's office with Deputy DA Mark Callan (Wilson Bethel) — and public defender Emily Lopez (Jessica Camacho) broke up. While we initially thought that Emily broke up with Luke, we later learned that it was the other way around.

The other major plot point that was revealed at the end of the first episode of the season was that Judge Lola Carmichael (Simone Missick), the central character on the show, is pregnant. As 'All Rise' comes back for new episodes after its winter break, let's take a look at what happened until now and where the show will head in the new episode.

What happened previously?

In Episode 5 of Season 2 titled, 'The Perils of the Plea', Lola was overseeing a case against a Black man, Leon Parsons, who had shot another Black man after the latter made advances on his teenage daughter. Leon's case seems quite open and shut but we soon learn that it was the other man who took out the gun and while Leon might have shot the other man while grappling for the gun in self-defense, his chances did not look good.

This is why Lola advises Leon, and his lawyer, Emily, to take the plea deal. If he takes the plea deal, he can spend Christmas with his family, but if not and the jury finds him guilty — which both Lola and Emily think is likely — he will be sentenced to prison for six years and will not be able to see his children growing up.

After thinking it through, Leon takes the hard decision to plead guilty and accept the plea deal, meaning he would be able to spend the holidays with the family. However, as the episode ends and the camera zooms in on what the jury had decided, we see that had the case proceeded with the jury's decision, he would have been declared not guilty.

Meanwhile, Mark is pursuing a case against a few police officers, including a sheriff in an officer-involved shooting that led to another man being wrongly framed. Mark is pursuing the case to make sure the sheriff serves time and this is sure to raise the ire of the police department and looks to be a season-long plot.

What to expect in Episode 6

The synopsis for the upcoming episode states:

"It’s a new year and Lola’s baby is due any day. She learns the jury was going to deliver a “not guilty” verdict in a case in which she pressured defendant Leon Parsons to take a plea deal, forcing her to decide whether to let the plea stand and protect her reputation or reveal what she knows to Leon."

"Also, Mark is in the midst of an intense negotiation with DA Louis Bravo regarding how and when to arrest and charge Deputy Sheriff Rashel for attempted murder, when Mark is the victim of a brazen knife attack."

As always, Lola is always one to do the right thing, and should she reveal what she knows about the jury's decision, her reputation and her career could be on the line. Meanwhile, it looks like Mark's determination is going to put him in danger.

With the case against the police officers proceeding, fans can also look forward to the presence of Anne Heche as police union lawyer Corinne Cuthbert and Rick Fox as August Fox, who introduces Luke to the idea of restorative justice.

'All Rise' returns to CBS with new episodes on Monday, January 4, 2021, at 9/8c.
