The highly-anticipated, elite, most expensive event of the year — the 2021 MET Gala just happened and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tried to make a statement with her dress. With the theme 'American Independence', celebrities had plenty to play with, but Ocasio-Cortez chose to sashay a chic white, exemplarily tailored evening gown with the words 'TAX THE RICH' written in bold red across the back. However, social media happened to fixate on something else entirely: Ocasio-Cortez's dress was oddly reminiscent of Joy Villa's 'BUILD THE WALL' dress from the 2019 Grammys.

Whether Ocasio-Cortez intended to slam with a classic throwback or not isn't quite out in the public. But social media is clearly not over the similarities between Ocasio-Cortez's off-shoulder tulle-bottom gown, and the wall-printed outfit with a plunging neckline that Villa had shocked people with in the past.

Ocasio-Cortez's bold statement comes in lieu of her MET debut. The Congresswoman, who is oft-criticized on social media for her seemingly far-left views, once again garnered flak for attending such a posh event with irony sprawled across her back. Social media was quick to call out the odd placement of this gown, claiming that Ocasio-Cortez was attending an event that only 0.1 percent get invited to. The ticket for the event is no joke either with prices soaring to as high as reportedly $35,000 for a single attendee. Maybe the dress would have suited better other commitments, but slamming the rich while attending an event for, by, and of the rich people seemed beyond hypocritical to many.

Yet, social media found more aspects of the outfit to fixate over when one user shared photos of Villa dubbed the 'MAGA Lady' wearing that outrageous 'BUILD THE WALL' attire. "THE CINEMATIC PARALLELS BETWEEN AOCS TAX THE RICH DRESS AND THE MAGA LADY OH MY GOD," the user wrote sharing two photos of Villa — with both the front and back angles of her infamous attire. Villa had chosen to complete her pro-Donald Trump look with a little red MAGA purse that she flaunted and held up for the camera while posing to give a better shot. And now Ocasio-Cortez's seeming activism looks the same to social media, once the irony of the entire ensemble was pointed out.

Other users who hailed Ocasio-Cortez's dress, tweeted: "AOC’s Met Gala dress has the same aura as the “Build the Wall” dress." One more asked: "Has anyone realized that AOC’s “Tax the Rich” dress is making fun of Joy Villa’s “Build the Wall” dress? Yes? No? That’s all I really care about re: Met Gala. Snarky bitch-slaps via fashion." Another wrote: "aoc wears a “tax the rich” dress in an apparent mockery of joy villa’s “build the wall” dress from the 2019 grammys. inch resting".

Some defended the Congresswoman further, writing: "'aoc shouldn't be wearing that dress at a rich people party' it is literally a fundraiser for the met. IT IS LITERALLY A FUNDRAISER. also its a parallel to that one woman who wore a dress that said build the wall to the grammys" Others wrote: "lol the outrage from the right wingers about AOC’s dress is so cringe. Saying that she spent 35k to attend the gala. She’s mocking the inbred muppet who wore a dress that said “Build the Wall”, which the right had zero issue with despite it being estimated 15 billion $ price tag".
