JEFFERSON COUNTY, COLORADO: Colorado resident Alexa Bartell was killed in a freak accident on Wednesday, April 19, when a rock was tossed at her moving car. The local police department is looking into her death and a series of Wednesday night incidents that are similar to it.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office stated that Bartell, 20, was on the move in Jefferson County at around 10.45 pm when suspects, who are thought to be in a car or potentially on a roadside, threw a large rock at Bartell's car, according to CBS News. The sheriff's office claimed that Bartell was on the phone with a friend when a rock smashed through the windshield, struck, and killed her. Bartell's friend discovered her fatally wounded inside her car after it had veered off the road and into a field.

Similar incidents

Authorities asserted that numerous other cases involving rocks being launched at moving cars occurred late on Wednesday night, April 19, until early on Thursday morning, April 20, according to CBS News. However, no additional incidents resulted in death.

In Westminster, a rock was thrown through a windshield at 10.04 pm, but no harm was done to the driver. About half-hour later, two similar instances happened in Boulder County close to the Rock Creek community. Another rock was hurled through a windshield at 10.36 pm, injuring the driver of the car only slightly.

A Toyota's body was damaged by a rock that was hurled at it a minute later at 10.37 pm, but the driver was unharmed. About eight minutes later, Bartell's fatal occurrence had transpired. The final incident noted happened in Arvada more than an hour and a half later, when a rock was once more tossed through a windshield, causing minor injuries on the driver.

Police claimed that the suspects might have been using a "light-colored pickup truck or SUV," and they think there might be more victims, according to CBS News. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office stated that an investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office, Arvada Police, and Westminster Police.

'I am calling for an all out rock ban'

Many people have reacted to the incident on Twitter with one person writing, "Wtf is wrong with people??? God bless her." Another person sarcastically wrote, "I am calling for an all out rock ban. Mr and Mrs American turn in those rocks." A third person who had a similar encounter wrote, "About a year ago, I had someone throw an object at my car as I drove down Colorado ave. Left a small dent and hole in my car. Scared the out of me. Made a police report. Nothing happened."

"How do you throw a rock big enough and fast enough, yet far enough away to go through the windshield of a car and kill someone?" this other curious individual wrote, to which someone else replied, "The momentum of the car is supplying the force. Like when a small pebble bounced up from a car in front will crack a windshield when you hit it."
