A 20-year-old man, has been acquitted in the court of law for murdering his own father. Alex Pompa was freed of all charges on November 24 in the Court of Assizes, Turin, in the Piedmont region, Italy. He was accused of murdering his father, Giuseppe, who died in a town near Cologne on April 30, 2020. Pompa had allegedly stabbed Giuseppe "dozens" of times before calling in the emergency services and surrendering himself. His father was pronounced dead at the scene. Pompa is the son of a woman who faced violent abuse at the hands of her husband

Similar incidents have been reported from across the globe including the time a French mother Valerie Bacot shot Daniel Polette, a man who raped her when she was just 12 and had four kids with her. This happened in the small village of Baudemont, Lyon. Polette was Bacot's stepfather who then installed her as his wife and had kids with her. He would subject his family to alcoholic rage and Bacot accused him of prostituting her to other men in the back of the family car. He would spy on her and give advice as to what to do with "clients" through an earpiece. Bacot shot Polette in the neck in 2015 after being raped by a man Polette had pimped her out to, according to the Guardian.

'If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be here today': Pompa's mom

In the case of Pompa investigating judge Stefano Vitelli said in court last year that Pompa acted with "unprecedented" and "disproportionate violence against his father, probably more out of anger/revenge" than "for indispensable self-defense". He said the acquired evidence did not allow stating with certainty that Pompa acted in a "situation of defensive necessity proportionate to the offense". However, the case has concluded with the courts saying that the young man's actions "[did] not constitute a crime." His mother too had spoken in the courtroom in his favor when the trial was still on. "If it weren't for him, I wouldn't be here today," she said.

Along with the mom, Pompa's brother testified in his favor, proving to be the key in his acquittal. His brother said, "My father was a sick man, obsessed with jealousy and control over my mother." The court made record of 300 threats directed by Giuseppe at his wife and towards his children. The slain 52-year-old was said to be so violent that Alex and his brother Loris had stopped going out of the house at night, fearing that their mother would be in danger if left alone with their father. The courts heard that the Covid-19 pandemic made the violence much worse. On the night of the crime, Giuseppe had arrived from work angry and drunk on wine.

He proceeded to vent his anger on his wife which prompted Pompa to pick a knife and stab his father multiple times. He immediately phoned in the emergency services to confess and the court accepted his lawyer's request to serve custody on house arrest. Pompa was interviewed by La Repubblica after being freed of the charges. He said, "Now I just want to go home and get my life back. See the Inter match, have dinner with my family. Take a trip, a normal life."
