Alex Murdaugh's sister-in-law Marion Proctor says he cheated on wife Maggie, jury barred from hearing claim
WALTERBORO, SOUTH CAROLINA: Two people have claimed Alex Murdaugh cheated on his late wife Maggie, but the jury in the disgraced attorney's double murder trial will not hear about it. Marion Proctor, the accused killer's sister-in-law, recently testified before a South Carolina judge that she believes the disgraced lawyer cheated on her sister 15 years ago.
Proctor claimed that her sister, who was found dead next to Paul outside a dog kennel on the SC estate in June 2021, kicked Alex out of the house because she was having second thoughts at the time of the alleged affair. Prosecutors wanted Proctor to testify about the extramarital affairs because they believe Alex, 54, murdered Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, in cold blood to distract from his confessed financial frauds and drug addiction.

What did the judge say?
Judge Clifton Newman ruled that Alex's claimed affair occurred too long ago to be included in the trial, citing the risk of confusing jurors.
Alex Murdaugh's alleged affair with sex worker
After Proctor's testimony, a 2002 interview also circulated in which a former sex worker claimed Alex slept with her and abused her. Lindsey Edwards said she slept with the notorious legal heir four times nearly a decade ago. Edwards claimed Murdaugh choked her so much during their meetings that she passed out and even pulled out parts of her hair. Many have questioned whether Edwards, who has claimed she believed she could die while with Murdaugh, will be called as a witness, especially given her claims of physical abuse. According to an earlier report, Edwards was questioned for hours by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
Although Murdaugh has defended himself since his arraignment, he admitted on the stand Friday that he was undoubtedly near the scene of the crime at the time it was committed. Later in the trial, he maintained his innocence, claiming he believed a psychotic social media user learned of his son's boating accident and murdered his family members in revenge, according to the New York Post.
Who is Judge Clifton Newman?
The Circuit Courts of South Carolina have appointed Clifton Newman as an at-large justice. He was chosen by the South Carolina General Legislature to serve from May 2000 and will hold office until 2027 after being re-elected in 2021, per WJCL.
Newman earned his undergraduate degree from Cleveland State University and received his JD from Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He is no outsider to the media attention and courtroom antics that have encircled the Murdaugh case up to this point, having presided over the courtroom procedures ever since the disbarred lawyer was first accused of killing his wife and son.
