She explained that hers was just one story out of the 1,800 people present that day. And while going back out has been hard for her, she has learned that it is important to live life to the fullest. Swiss took to stage and performed P!nk's 'Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken'. The judges were in awe of Swiss's performance, with Heidi Klum praising her voice control while Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell praised her being 'gutsy' and performing, despite having gone through such a dark time in her life. When Terry Crews asked Swiss is she had any advice to give viewers, Swiss stated that it people shouldn't let anything hold them back from chasing their dreams.

Fans, however, were less than impressed with Swiss's performance. "Can singers please stop going on #AGT PLEASE!!??!? Almost every time it's some sob story and then, some person that sings like 100 other people on American idol, somehow Simon gives, a standing O like high fives, a complete opposite of American Idol, he has turned into" said a fan. "So, night 1 must be a joke? Where's the talent? #AGT" said another. "#AGT Sorry Ava Swiss...." wrote a fan. "What are the judges talking about? Those were not million dollar vocals. For a singer to win you gotta blow the roof off the house. That was not a very strategic song choice. Way too safe" said a fan.
