'Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story' is based on the real-life serial killer Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer, who also had an alias, and was known as the 'Milwaukee Cannibal' or the 'Milwaukee Monster.' It is said that Dahmer was a sex offender who committed the murder and dismemberment of 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. Apparently, many of his later murders involved necrophilia, cannibalism, and the permanent preservation of body parts—typically all or part of the skeleton as shown in the Netflix series.

The limited-run series was released on September 21, 2022, and received raving reviews from critics. Kayla Cobb at Decider said the show "isn’t just well directed, written, and acted. It’s rewriting what a crime drama can look like if we stop glorifying murderers and start focusing more on systematic failures." However, on the other hand, fans have turned Twitter into a meme fest after they watched Netflix's biographical crime drama limited series. 'Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,' is co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.
