Ace Hardware may be the perfect stop to shop for grills, hardware, home improvement, lawn and garden equipment and tools — however, the store came into the limelight on September 9, 2020, when it mysteriously started trending on Twitter. On further inspection, it was found that a tweet from Boston Police Patrolmen's Association (BPPA) had sparked the viral trend.

"Sadly, one of our officers had a bad experience @AceHardware store in Allston today. While in the store, an employee stated, 'I smell bacon.' When the officer asked for an apology, he was told there’d be none. In response, items purchased were returned and a customer lost," the tweet read and it soon went on to collect over 3,000 replies and likes.

Going by the meaning of 'I smell bacon' as per Urban Dictionary, it is slang for 'the police are coming' or the 'police are here'. Apparently, that slang hit them right in the chest and started the scuffle.

On the microblogging site, a debate stirred among the people as they argued whether it's right to defund the police or the employee should apologize. "Defunding you guys would feel incredible," one tweet read and another said, "Maybe you should reflect on why people don't like you."

Many even went on to say they won't shop at that store anymore. "I might not shop at Ace Hardware anymore," one tweet read. Meanwhile, others said they would definitely go shopping there: "I would shop at the Ace Hardware but the person who owns the local outfits fights any sort of law to turn dry counties wet where I live."

Others felt that it was wrong and posted comments like: "This is disgraceful! There should be an apology," and "Sadly, so many police officers lie about people being rude to them because they aren't just violent thugs, they're whiny violent thugs."

"It was JUST disrespectful, not "the worse that's ever happened to anyone" that too is disrespectful. I personally do not give any money to any business that allows this type of behavior to ANYONE! Plenty of other businesses that would gladly take the money," one Twitter user went on to say.

Wondering who actually runs the account, one Twitter user posted: "I'm trying to figure out who runs this Twitter account. Do they even know what's going on with the Boston PD? - Embezzlement of $200,000 public funds by 8 officers? - Former assoc president raping children? No one cares about your alleged encounter at ace hardware, Boston PD."

Moreover, many started trolling the tweet. "You know, in defense of Ace Hardware, one of my coworkers smelled like a bean and cheese taco this morning, so maybe the employee did smell bacon. And on top of that, sometimes people go on diets and end up smelling food that is nowhere near them. Just saying..." one said. Another posted, "There was a reason this was my favorite Ace Hardware when I lived in Boston. Even if you have to B line to get to this side of town please buy your household supplies here. Boston Police officers should resign if they are hurt by snarky comments."

In defense of the store and the company, one Twitter user said: "All Ace’s are privately owned. Like the one near me is called “Steven’s Ace Hardware”. This Tweet hurts other PRIVATE OWNED FRANCHISED Ace Hardware. Way to go stupid a**hole police dept. hurting small business across the country bc your feelings weren’t fluffed! Snowflake!"

While we do not know who exactly posted that tweet, it has stirred many negative comments on Twitter and several people think that they may be lying. Film producer and author Tariq Nasheed said, "The Boston Police Union put out that copaganda, bogus sounding Ace Hardware story to get some public sympathy, because Boston police union president Pat Rose was arrested for child rape."

Until we get an official response from the BPPA, MEA World Wide (MEAWW) cannot independently verify the tweet and claims being made on the Internet. This story will be updated as per new reports.
