Contains major spoilers for Season 2 Episode 17 of 'A Million Little Things' titled 'One Year Later'

At the beginning of the episode, Gary Mendez (James Roday) wakes up from perhaps the most haunting of nightmares. He is playing video games in his house with his dearest friend Jon Dixon (Ron Livingston), who happens to be dying from cancer. With some of the wires to his life-saving machinery unplugged, Gary is running out of time on Jon, who is dying with every second.

Gary is not the only one having nightmares about losing his best friend Jon. When Jon committed suicide a year ago, he had caught all those close to him by surprise, especially his family and closest friends of over a decade, who couldn't believe that the seemingly happiest person of their lot took his own life.

On the other hand, Eddie Saville (David Giuntoli), on the anniversary of his best friend's death, keeps listening to the last voice note than Jon sent him - "Love each other". Some time ago though, he had a nightmare about Jon too. He dreams of being at the lakehouse on a boat with Jon discussing about Eddie's alcoholism. When suddenly Jon falls off the boat and drowns in the lake. A frantic Eddie is desperate to save him - he cannot lose his friend once again especially since all he has to do is pull him out of the water.

But Eddie's nightmare has a mystery attached to it. Eddie dreams of the lakehouse that he was talking about with his sister Lindsey (Sprague Grayden). When a hand finally emerges from the cold water, it is not that of Jon's - it is a girl's hand with neon green-ish nail paint on it. Eddie wakes up from his nightmare confused, worried and scared.

If anything, Rome is the only one of Jon's closest friends who has no nightmares/dreams about him. These nightmares were all the more troublesome for Gary who also saw his ex-girlfriend Maggie Bloom (Allison Miller). Gary's nightmares indicate his obsession with saving the two most important people of his life. He couldn't save Jon from committing suicide, so he became obsessed with saving Maggie. And even a year later he feels like he hasn't moved forward.

'A Million Little Things' airs on Thursdays at 10/ 9c on ABC.
